Were JL8 calipers originally painted, or were they natural iron?

From Jerry's 1969 book - but just for disc brake calipers, not specific to JL8 - Semi-gloss black or natural finish acceptable.

Pics of the ones I have seen seem to show natural steel.

But many components were painted with cheap black paint that did not last very long.

In this vintage photo (1968) Service Pkg you can just see the Caliper on the Floor near a disc, looks painted as the contrast of the bleeder and pipe are visible when magnified.

Parts for service did not always get the same treatment as assembly line parts.

Semi gloss black paint and machined after they were painted.

Are there any Vintage detailed photos of 1969 Factory installed JL8 out there?

See Michael Lamm's book - The Great Camaro.   There is a picture of a JL8 rear axle  on page 67.    The calipers appear painted.   Page 64 also has a picture, but more difficult to tell if they are painted.

John Hooper's book, The 1969 Camaro Reference Book, has pictures of JL8 calipers on page 123 & 127.   Appears painted, but sorta hard to confirm 100%.

Thanks for the info. Can't remember any finish except rust on mine when acquired in mid 70's.

Yes, and newest 68/69 NCRS judging manual states same as what we expect on from disc, painted low gloss black prior to machining so machined surfaces should be bare metal.
