I have a friend (I won't mention her name), but she has a 1999 Buick Century. She was complaining that the car was making squealing noises when she went to put on the brakes.

I went over yesterday and did a brake job for her, but I can't imagine WHY it was making noises!!!

Yikes! My cousin had a similar situation with an Explorer. "Why are the brakes squeaking, my truck won't stop, and the pedal goes to the floor?" Well, after ordering new parts, and guess who (me!) fixed it. Im amazed why people let it go this far and being so dangerous?

There is plenty of meat left on those, you just need to double up on the pads.... ;D

My local parts house has one exactly like that sitting on their counter for a few years. The owner was sure all he needed was new pads.

Nope. California only requires smog tests.

New York requires yearly inspections for all antiques, new vehicles and trailers.

Wow, I've never seen anything like that.  Luckily she has you as a friend otherwise she'd eventually be hitting A wall somewhere!

We have annual safety inspections down here, and a braking performance test is a mandatory part of that. Even if you somehow missed seeing those worn rotors during the visual inspection, the brake test would've shown it up. Annual inspection is about $30 and you must have that safety inspection in hand to renew annual registration and compulsory 3rd-party insurance cover.
