I'm tring to help someone out here on the D88 option (multi color nose stripe) .....I know it was offered after Jan. 68 and was introduced with the mid year color changes of Corvette Bronze,Rally Green,ect... and shown in the revised 68 sales brochure....It was cancelled in the AIM on 2-28-68 or 3-16-68 per CRG.....Does the CRG have any on record? What is the earlist known or last known? If I remember correctly his car is a 10C..way to early in my thoughts to be a D88 car......He claims dealer option...Doubtful in my opinion.Car has been repainted with a few questionable areas but it is a 325/396 TH400.....Any thoughts? Thanks.

Steve,

I don't believe the D88 "Multi-Color Nose Strips" option was ever actually released for production. Although it's in the AIM, the time required to introduce the stripe into production, and the almost instantanious time frame to which it was cancelled, would have negated the option entirely. This time frame (per the AIM) is as follows:

Introduced on December 27th, 1967
Redrawn on February 1st, 1968 (34 days after the introduction)
Cancelled on February 28th, 1968 (27 days after the revision)

In my opinion, this was not enough time to place into production.

However, I could be wrong (and have been before), so I'll let one of the CRG guys confirm (or deny) my theory!!

So far I've found one car with the stripe on it......20 years ago! Lemans Blue ragtop......never got any numbers, but looked to be orig. paint.....Looks to be quite difficult to paint, which would explain the cancellation....and rarity if it did exist at all...Still surprised it made the revised brochure...

My Fisher Body manual says the stripe was dropped mid-year or thereabouts, due to production problems like L30 suggested. The manual says it was a legitimate option, so who knows if any made it through? It would be cool to see an original one!

Camaro book that Michael Lamm put out in the mid 70's has a black & white picture of a 68 with a model standing beside the front fender holding one end of the multi-color stripe as if she is applying it. According to that picture, the option would have been a decal, not a painted on stripe. If I remember the notaion at the bottom of the picture, the option was for "Hugger month" which may have been February.

We've only seen one car (red) with it, supposedly original but the car had several details wrong on it. No docs on the car.

Thanks for your opinions so far.......Looks like they were well on ther way promoting it,but there could have very well been a problem with decals,stencils....ect. Does not look very easy to keep straight....I do know this cars stripes were painted....although...not by the factory..

We did have a very unconfirmed report that the stripe was created for a Dr. Pepper promotion campaign.  Only hearsay, no backup.  Only mentioning this in case it rings a memory bell with someone.

Can you imagine the stripes on the 396 shown above on a black or British Green car? Wow, I think it would be gorgeous.

mark i sent you a pm

So, this thread is 11 years old. I believe mark is still around so perhaps you will get a reply.

Just for my curiosity, did you purchase a Camaro that supposedly had this stripe from the factory?

A red 1968 convertible VIN 124678N409488 perhaps?

I would like to know if an original paint car with this stripe has been found.
