Keep it original...I do agree, the gold is not one of my favorit colors either but once it's shiny and fresh it will probably change your mind.

One more thought, document everything as is before you make changes. Lots and lots of digital photos, especially of things before they get changed.

You should take a million photos any way.  If you are like most it's great to look back and see where you have progressed to.  They help with the reassembly too!
