Breather elbow hose

I need some help. Im working on getting some things back original on my 69 Z. I have original breather base and VC elbow. Have an original NOS 3932336 connecting hose. AIM shows the bend back. Most all restored cars have it forward. I can't get it to fit either way. Which is right?

Here's a couple of original photos.

The first shows it can't be installed with the connector pointing left.

A couple of observations. The hose has to be positioned much farther down the connector than it is. I suspect your air cleaner base may not be correct, or the tube is loose. The original pics seem to show the tube in a slightly different location or clocked differently. There were several different open element air cleaner bases.
