Mild Modifications / Re: 69 maximum rear tire size
October 31, 2014, 01:54:27 PM
Use a 15 X 8" wheel with 4.5" backspace for a 275/60/15 tire.  I am using 17 X 8 with 4.5" backspace and  255/45/17 tires on my 68 Camaro.

It is safer to stick to no wider than a 255 tire, but 275 will barely fit without rubbing.

Buy a Scat 496 rotating assembly .  All you have to do then is make 1 hp/cu inch, a piece of cake.
Use a hydraulic roller cam about 220/230 @.050" with about .550" lift.  You can use the factory long-slot rocker arms and keep the stock valve covers.
Look for oval port heads with a casting # ending in 781 or 049.  Have these rebuilt or better yet buy new edelbrock heads.
Compression should be ~9.5-1 for cast iron and 10-1 for aluminum.
You will have a nice idle and tons of torque. Shift at 5500 to 5800 rpm and have fun without breaking parts.   :)

WOW, that DOES look good !!  The black tailpanel gives it a "mean" look.

Thanks !  ;D

Hey thanks guys !  I will proceed with blacking out the tailpanel.  And if anyone has pics of a Camaro painted like this I would love to see them.

Thanks again.

So you're saying a red Camaro with white convertible top could be ordered and it would not come with the blacked-out tailpanel ?  Even if it's a big block car ?

Originality / Is this paint color combo possible ?

Did any 68 Camaro convertibles come from the factory with red paint and a white top ?  And if it was equipped with a big block, would the tailpanel still be painted black ?
My convertible has red paint and a white top and I'm swapping in a BBC and want it to appear as original as possible.  I'm wondering if the black tailpanel will look bad with a white top and white stripes.    ???
