The car was not low on oil. The dipstick read almost to the full mark. I am having a slightly larger leak than usual from around the filter. I did change out the filter yesterday and the leak still seems to be there. It is tough to see under there due to the headers but I will get a better look hopefully tonight.

I did change the oil and there was no large particles or debris. Would you guys suggest dropping the pan and replacing or cleaning out the pump??

I also have a question regarding Oil Pressure...

On Friday night I took the car out to the usual meet and eveything was fine. I started it up and let it idle to warm up for 10mins. I then went to the meet and hung out for a little while. After leaving the show the car had almost 60psi on start up. While driving the pressure dropped to around 30psi. I had to make a stop at the store and that is when the pressure dropped to ZERO. The motor sounded like it was knocking. I kicked the throttle to bring the idle up higher and then the pressure resumed and the sound disappeared.

Now what would have caused this? I talked to a few fellows and their suggestion is that as the motor warms up the clearances increase and the oil is getting by casuing the pressure to drop. They recommended using a heavier weight oil and see if this corrects the problem. Currently I have 10w30 in the 454 so I will try a 20w50 which I was running in the 396 and see if this help.

Any help on this would be great.

I think the balancer is slightly warped as the rubber is bulging in some spots and receeded in others. I will be pulling it off and taking it to a race shop tomorrow to have them look at it.

I will take pictures to show the closeness of these items(balancer and pully)

Also I did find a brand new GM Flywheel part#3993827 which is for this motor a 78. Not a bad price either....From teh Stealership only 250.00 cdn. Not bad since the closet and cheapest aftermarket was 235cdn and a week away from me. So I will be pulling the motor again tonite and removing these 2 items and try again tomorrow.

Thanks John. I have talked to a few guys here and it seems that the concensus is that i put the 396 flywheel on. I will pull it off and get a 454 flywheel. Also I will look into the pulley also.

Sucks cause i got everything bolted up nice to. Is it a tough job to remove and replace the flywheel in the car or would it be easier to pull the motor AGAIN...LOL

Just got the 454 in the car and  fired it up yesterday. I got the timing set to 0degs right now..But here is my problem.....The car shakes madly when you rev it up anywhere past idle. The thing I see is it looks like the balancer is warped. What I mean is it is rubbing on the water pump pully just slightly. I notice by the paint be rubbed off. Also it looks liek when the car is running you can see the balancer has a slight wobble....How can I fix this? Also this motor had a auto attached and I replace the flexplate with my flywheel. Would this cause this motor to shake this bad?? PLease help i want to cruise with it as it has been 5yrs since I had the chance to drive it down the road.

Im having a hard time finding a set of Polyurathane Motor Mounts for my 68' BB. Do you guys have any ideas or suggestions where a guy can pick some up. I have already ordered the Hyper-Flex kit from energy to redo all the factory bushings so far.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Also would you guys say a solid mount is better vs. the rubber mounts for my application. 454 approx. 300hp with 4 speed

Hey guys,

i found an good old 454 and bought it for the camaro. I am going to install it but before i do i want to clean the motor up without tearing it apart. What is a good way of getting the oil and grease out of the cast before painting. Now remeber the enigie is complete and i am going to reseal it but that is as far as I am planning on pulling it apart.

Any suggestions.

So far i have sparyed it down with brake clean and pressure washed the crap out of it but i have all the little spots to get cleaned before i paint it.

I have a question. Can this test be done on an engine before it is installed into the car. the reason I ask is I just bought a 454 for the 68 and i would like to do this test before installing to see if I have to pull it farther apart.

What do you guys think??
