Are the two contacts on the points suppose to sit parallel to each other when out of the car? My set has a gap on one edge when closed, is this to compensate for the dwell setting when opened? The contact burns are on the outer edge, not sure if this is normal. These points have about 200 miles on them.
Yes they should be making full facial contact, which when done gives you the maximum and non arcing pattern unlike the meltdown you currently have. I would get a new set although you could atttempt to realign them. You need to fix it anyway, so give it a bend.
I owned one Accel distributor. Put it on a machine to set the points and found out the cam was ground wrong that some of the cylinders fired at least 3 degrees off. It was new at the time, in '72.
When you get new points you should check the face alignment and make should both circles align. Accel points while advertised high perf I believe relates to the spring pressure to keep points from bouncing at high RPM not quality control. Not that I could recommend another brand any better with parts as they are today.
