Title: Spark plug heat shields
Post by: Gimmea250swb on August 19, 2020, 08:31:16 AM
I'm considering refreshing (cleaning) my engine.  I may attack the exhaust manifolds first.  Can you tell me if these spark plug heat shields are original?  If so, should I blast and replate them with a home plating kit?  Is there a better option.  I'm not showing the car, but would like to stay in the realm of original.

Those heat shields are not original for 1969 Z28. They look about 1974-77 vintage. Original heat shields have a small 1/2 moon cutout on the outside edge. Check with D&R or Heartbeat for reproduction shields and you will see the difference.

The bracket and screw #274430 in the two-part spark heat shields (i.e, driver's side) were painted orange because they were already attached to the engine when it was painted orange...before reaching the assembly line.  The shield portion #3845717 and screw #447143 of the two-part shield were not painted because they were attached on the assembly line.  The welded one-part heat shield (i.e., passenger side) was also not painted because it was attached on the assembly line.
