Title: 1969 Camaro Z28 distributor 1111480
Post by: suturb110 on September 21, 2018, 09:21:31 PM
Question.

Why a lot of the 1969 Camaro Z28 distributors (1111480) seemed to get traded out with something else back in the day?

I can only speak for my own... When I bought my car and rebuilt the engine in 1976, the 480' was sloppy, needed shimming at the very least, and I had a perfect Mallory Rev Pol in hand, so I installed the revpol and used a Judson electronic magneto for the coil- that worked great, would rev to 8G+ without a miss...  Car was parked in 1980, and then around 2010 I found the '480' where I'd left it... in the shelves behind my work bench!  :)     Probably everyone isn't the hoarder that i am?

Nor do many people keep their cars as long as I do... :)

The original owner of my red Z had the distributor recurved about every 3 months or so , judging by receipts .
Perhaps it was loose or had some issues?

Or a shop swapped in another one they had , and thought no big deal...

Because when you popped your hood. it was cool to show off to your friends the aftermarket parts, for bragging rights.

Points float seemed to be an issue back then. Don't know if good HD point sets weren't available, or we didn't know where they were. In any case a Mallory dual point was the speed tip of the week. When I purchased my current 69Z in 1975 the deal was done and I thought to ask if he had any extra parts that he had removed. Walked away with the original carb and distributer which were on a shelf in the garage. Lucky catch

Realize this is an old thread.  Only 1 of 2 threads that a search for "Mallory RevPol" found.

The Mallory RevPol DoubleLife dual-point distributor is unique?  It only has a 4-Lobe Point Cam.  Each point set fires only 4-times per revolution rather than 8-times, each point-set fires only 4-times each to fire all 8 cylinders.  Is this correct?

A conventional Dual-Point Distributor has an 8-Lobe Point Cam, both point-sets fire 8-times per revolution, and point overlap overlaps increasing coil saturation.  Is this correct?

The Mallory RevPol DoubleLife Dual Point 4-Lobe Distributor should be more rpm friendly since the point-sets are cycling at a lower rate?

I've rebuilt a few Mallory's over the years.  I've only messed with 2 Rev Pol's but I found a thread over on the HAMB forum that help better explain how the Rev Pol works.  I don't want to misquote any of the info as its been a couple years and I always have to go back and read up again.  I'll see if I can find it along with some ads that explain the system.   Might take a couple days.

Shameless plug.
Here's a couple Double Life Mallory's for sale by a guy I know if anyone was looking for something vintage day 2 distributors.   :)

YES, to the above two points about the Mallory RevPol distributor..  and as I stated previously...

MALLORY REV POLL QUESTION. HEY BUBBA YA OUT THERE? Link (https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/mallory-rev-poll-question-hey-bubba-ya-out-there.428951/#post-4696449)

Edit:  Heres some instructions.  Note that the early versions had 2 condensers and later in 4/70 it was dropped to one condenser making it just like the Double Life but still using the switch along with the Rev Pol coil.

Most dual points distributors fired the points a few degrees from each other making two condensers necessary. Did the  one with one condenser do this. If not was there really any benefit to having two sets of points if they fired together?

All Mallory dual points I have messed with fire at different intervals.

Quote from the link above.

"The special twin primary ignition coil offered the same benefits of the Harmon Collins, du-coil and Grant Flamethrower offered.
Twin contacts each operating its own primary. This allowed the rpm range to increase as the contacts didnt need to work but half time.
A increased faster dwell ( coil build up) also made the sixs (3 lobe) and the eights ( four lobe) increased the available spark at higher rpm.
I have one of theses on my gmc powered six Hambster dragster and it runs great.
However these coils are very hard to find. But i have a couple new old stock and have yet to see a defective one.
A typical unit will cruise at 8,000 plus all day long. ( difficult to do in 1953 !)"

I believe that the 4-lobe point cam was developed to increase the life of the distributor points:

Question.

Why a lot of the 1969 Camaro Z28 distributors (1111480) seemed to get traded out with something else back in the day?

I swapped mine for a Mallory YL-482HP dual point in '73, mainly because I ran that distributor on my Bel Air for years before I sold the '57 and bought the Z in '73 (and replaced the Mallory on the '57 with the Delco dual point that was on it when I bought it). I only ever set the points twice on the Mallory in all the years of driving both cars - once when new, once when I set it up on the Z. Terrifically reliable piece of equipment, finally sold the Mallory last year after 53 years of ownership. -
