Feature Car September 2015

This will be somewhat of a test. Depending on how things go, there may be one "Feature Car" per month, with a writeup of information about the car. The feature car does not have to be a show car. This is an opportunity for you to share some of the details about your car. The car this month is a "driver" and the owner is Bryon Miller.

This 1968 Camaro was built the third week of September in 1967 at the Norwood Assembly plant. It's production date from an NCRS shipping report is 09/20/1967. It was delivered to Dick Fencl Chevrolet, Inc. in Oak Park, IL. This dealership was known for selling high performance cars, especially Corvettes. The original exterior color was Cordovan Maroon. It had a black vinyl top, and Black Houndstooth interior. The car was most likely an L78 with an M21 transmission based on information gathered so far.

This was a drag race car for much it's life and was on at least it's third engine by around 1980. The car did receive a partial restoration in the 90s with new GM fenders and some other body panel replacement. It currently has a 454 engine bored 0.060 over. The block is a mid 70s "289" casting number block with 4 bolt main caps, forged dome pistons, Crane solid lifter camshaft, ported "781" casting number heads, an Edelbrock Air Gap intake and Holley 800 cfm carb. Compression ratio is around 10 to 1.

The transmission is an M21 from a 1968 Chevelle. The rear axle is original to the car and is coded for 3.73 gears. The car had 4.88 gears much of it's life, but currently has 3.31 gears. These are much better for cruising/gas mileage and the car is not currently being raced.

The current paint color is Cayman Pearl Metallic and it does show some age. You may notice the hood is an aftermarket cowl hood, painted satin black. This is an attempt to keep the old school "race car" type look. The interior is partially original, but the seats are currently black standard. Some other changes to the car from original include a Mallory ignition system, 3 way adjustable drag shocks and rear disc brakes.

Future plans for the car include going back to the original paint scheme, adding the correct fender emblems and replacing the seat foam and covers. The owner also has a period correct 396 CE engine block and period correct CT transmission case that may be used in a future restoration of the car.
