69 515 Voltage regulator R & R
« on: September 17, 2012, 07:49:04 PM »
Fried my VR this past weekend in the bad heat wave we are having here in So Cal. I recall in 2006 Mr John Pirkle rebuilt it for me. I understand he is no longer with us. Is there a rebuilder taking his place or can any CRG member recommend one or know of someone or who has hoarded stocks of these and has a 69 dated ( 9A) for sale.
Thanks for the help as always

Why not just install the Wells VR715 electronic regulator and put your old cap onto it? Fits like a glove.  Nobody would be the wiser and its much more reliable. And only around  $10 at most parts stores. :)

X2 on the Wells upgrade to Solid State.
If you are looking for an original Mechanical VR then try Heartbeatcity but expect to mortgage the farm first.

Thanks I will check into the wells set up but our car is all numbers matched so a date coded one for judging is necessary. Saw a seller on ebay with a bunch. The economy is in the toilet and he wants big bucks..........would still like to try to get this one fixed so any suggestions...........Thanks LM69Z28

I thought someone posted a thread about removing the guts from their VR and installing the guts from a solid state unit. Has the original base with p/n and date and the original lid. Martin

Howdy Ed and Marty Thanks for the info. I would prefer to try to get my ORIGINAL to the car VR rebuilt. If we can start from there can anyone recommend a rebuilder I can ship it to to see if its repairable or fishing weight.
I don't think I am up to doing the solid state conversion although it sounds like a great idea.
Thanks again for all the help!

John Pirkle, Jr. has continued his late father's business; he worked with his Dad for many years, so he knows what he's doing.

Really? $60 for a quality US made mechanical reg is what you consider is overly expensive? I think the price is very reasonable given all their intricate parts and to produce them on real American wages.
I bought a VR715 and oh my what a lightweight el cheapo piece they are. Not knocking solid state, but I would never buy a mechanical of compareable quality.
The company that rebuild my Delco suggested to use the mechanical over the solid state.. Don't know why, but I do and it's good.

I bought it through Alter-Start.. It's was built to 135amp..

This link is for an internal reg as they might just be out of stock of their ext reg models. They do 3-wire alts as well. $90 ain't bad, and a local guy looked inside my alt and was pretty impressed with the quality.
