1968 St. Jovite Trans-Am (Le Circuit Mont Tremblant)
« on: September 16, 2012, 05:36:25 AM »
We are fortunate to have some photos shared with us from our Canadian friend and Chaparral enthusiast, Mike Scott (group/7).
Mike took these photos himself back in the summer of '68. We'll start out with some from the Penske Camaro team.

Both Penske Camaros parked in the paddock area.

Sam Posey's #16 Sunoco Camaro, as seen from the front.

Mike Scott photo

Mark Donohue's #6 Sunoco Camaro, as seen from the rear.

Mike Scott photo

Here's the interior of Sam Posey's car. Notice the use of a billet aluminum hub for the steering wheel.
This was unusual for the era but was also something they did in '67 on Donohue's original Camaro.

Mike Scott photo

Donohue's Camaro is pointed toward the grid but for some reason it appears as though they are pushing it uphill.

Now we'll take a look at the Ronnie Kaplan prepared Javelins.

Here's a right front shot of the George Follmer #4 car.

Another very similar shot of the car.

A good look at the Javelin engine compartment.

The Javelin racing interior is all business.

Here's the back of the Peter Revson #3 car.

Mike Scott photo

Very interesting tail light treatment on these two cars. The stock lenses were not split with chrome accents like that.

Here's Peter Revson's Javelin on the pre-grid prior to the race.

The Gagnon Spring sponsored team of four different cars. Only the Mustang and the Firebird ran in the Trans-Am
event that weekend. Notice the very fancy trailer in front of the cars. This was no low-buck operation.

Mike Scott photo

A good look at the ex-Shelby Mustang driven by Dick Brown and also Francois Favreau in '68.

Mike Scott photo

The #77 Firebird owned by Terry Godsall and driven by Craig Fisher. This was an ex-Penske Camaro that was reskinned as a Firebird and
ex-Penske mechanic Tom Greatorex was coaxed into coming up to Canada to prepare and maintain the car. John Phillips was the crew chief.

Thanks for sharing your photos Mike.  Nice to know that there are still some unseen/unpublished photos from these early events that give us a close look at the cars and how they were prepared originally and photos of the guys that drove them.

Thanks for all the positive comments!

The Jerry Titus and Horst Kwech Mustangs nose-to-nose in the paddock. These are the Mustangs with the
infamous tunnel port 302 engines that made a lot of peak horsepower but seemed to blow at every race.

An shot of the Mustang interior. Probably the #2 car.

A look at the side of the Kwech Mustang.

Another shot on the pre-grid. That's the timing & scoring tower on the right.

The Titus and Kwech Mustangs head down to the grid prior to the race. That's Penske's pit with the 7A on the back door.

Titus' car shows the damage from hitting an embankment during the race after evading a slower car
during a passing manuever. He finished in 14th place and Kwech retired from the race on lap 44.

Here's the Porsche 911 driven by John Moore, Jr.
John drove a '67 Z-28 during the '67 Trans-Am season for Hugh Heishman out of Virginia.

Mike Scott photo

Action out on the track.

Mike Scott photo

I think this Chevy van may have belonged to Bob Bailey who drove a 911 in the Trans-Am race.

A Formula B car on the pre-grid prior to one of the support races that weekend.

Mike Scott photo

Part of the appeal of going to the races, besides seeing the cars in action, was the chance to see some good looking
girls. Sometimes it was for the chance to see some exotic cars like this De Tomaso Mangusta. For some, it was for all
three reasons (and maybe a wild party in the campground or at the hotel).

Mike Scott photo

Another exotic... the Intermeccanica Italia. Beautiful Italian styling but with Ford V8 power.

I was wondering if anybody was going to comment on that. I have no idea why they wrote 427... if it was a joke, somebody's ignorance, or what.
They definitely ran a 5-liter small block, not a big block.

Here's another race report, courtesy of Robert Byng.
