68 Camaro TH400 oil pan
« on: May 08, 2012, 01:00:49 AM »
Does anyone know if the TH400 oil pan in 68 Camaros was stamped with (Hydra-matic DIV OF GMC) or not. Secondly were they a plated or bare steel finish.

The ones I have seen have never had any stampings on the pan and are  plain steel. I have a 67 and it is plain steel. You may have a later model truck pan but I though that Hydra-matic was a division of GM not GMC truck. Like to see a picture of that pan. ;D

Like Bob's, my 67 TH400 has no markings and is plain steel. It definitely doesn't look close to the one on eBay.
I've seen a few 1st gen Camaro's with the TH400 and never recall seeing a bold or any stamping as that one.

I though that Hydra-matic was a division of GM not GMC truck.

"Div of GMC" means "Division of General Motors Corporation", not GMC truck.

John, thanks for the clarification, I did not connect the dots. :-[
Does bring up the question as to when the pans started being stamped, and possibly why.

Unless other 68 owners here can verify this, I don't see that ad being accurate in stating for 67 Camaro.  My 67 4B L35 has the original TH400 and it does not have that pan.
Many times I have seen eBay sales to be misleading or wrong.

Look on page 271 in 65-69 Chevrolet by the numbers for the correct pan usage. Not sure when in late 67 the second pan was put into production, but some time around July is indicated in fig. 15-22. Maybe someone with the Chevrolet Service News article could supply info.
Also on page 272 fig. 15-23 shows the filter that was used with early pan design. ;D
