Brake Line Brackets - Subframe and Rear Axle - Correct Finish?
« on: February 15, 2012, 01:12:14 AM »
OK, I searched the forums but could not find a clear answer - what is the correct finish for the two subframe brake line brackets and the rear axle brake line bracket?   Here's a picture for reference after I cleaned them up.  If black - satin, semi-gloss, gloss or?   Thanks in advance.

Here's a before clean-up picture.  I am guessing the original finish was natural stamped steel, though there are hints of black.   These are for a '69 Camaro with discs, Van Nuy build.

According to Jerry MacNeish's book they are supposed to be natural or silver cadmium dicromate.

I know the 5 brake brackets on our 68 were just bare metal pieces and the ones they repro are bare stampings except for In-line Tube, who has theirs painted black.

I thought all these were dipped black?  All of the 69 ones I cleaned were.

I just cleaned up & painted my brackets, the front bracket had very little paint on one side, probably from road blast, but the other side was defiantly painted. The bracket that holds the 2 lines with rubber insulators had NO paint on it.  Nor 11A. George

YEP, Just restored a unmolested 02B Van Nuys Z28, and they were black, they had runs and pretty sure they were dipped. The brkt that holds the 2 lines together was natural steel.

Appreciate everyones feedback.   Based on the feedback, it appears the front two brake-subframe brackets were dipped.  That may explain the inconsistent finish that I observed (see second photo in my first post where you can see build up in some areas).  I'm also guessing that the brackets may have had stamping oils remaining on them prior to dip resulting in poor adhesion and overtime this caused some of the paint to flake away.

I'm also concluding the rear axle housing bracket is natural finish as is the brake line bracket.  I looked at brake line braket last night and other than being greasy, does not appear to have any paint anywhere.

Thanks!

I'd be curious to see what others have noted on 67/68 front brake line (4 of them) brackets? I noticed no paint on ours but that does not mean its that way. Mike and others, any observations?

I am restoring my diff. and found the rear brake hose support on the body was painted black, had sealer on the back side also. The bracket on the diff. had no paint. When I went to bolt up the diff. bracket the standard wide flange diff bolt made a new scar on the bracket. I have an odd bolt with a captured lock washer that matches the original scar on the bracket. AIM states the bracket used the same diff cover bolt but I am seeing mine had a lock washer bolt. Anybody else seen this?
George.

George, yes our 68 01B had a different bolt used for the brake hose bracket attached to the 12 bolt as well similar to yours and agree that our 68 AIM states to use the bolt from the cover but that did not happen apparently. Now that has me thinking that I should not have painted that bolt as it would be easy to assume the bolt since installed with the bracket after paint should just be phosphate.
Concerning the other bracket attached to the underbody-Did you notice any signs of it being a dipped part and were the screw heads painted? That bracket on our car had only a small amount of rust pits compared to the other brackets that had a lot. Our car had been media blasted which included the underneath so probably evidence of paint was taken off but interesting enough I did not notice or remember any paint where it was secured to the underbody though.
Good info.......

Chick, the body bracket shows paint on both sides as noticed by paint under bolts. I will blast the bracket today and might be able to tell if it was dipped. I have a picture from under the car that shows it was installed after the bottom was painted. I cant answer on the bolts. Also notice one exhaust hanger was installed before the bottom was painted. That has been a real mystery to me. Thanks for the diff bolt confirmation. George
