69 Pace Car, Original Dealer Invoice
« on: February 08, 2012, 11:27:01 PM »
I'm fortunate not only to be the owner of a '69 Pace Car Camaro, but also have the original GM Protect-O-Plate and the original dealer invoice that went with the sale of the car. On this sheet are two areas of curiosity I could use your help with:

One, is in an area on the invoice that contains the following: Description, Color, Trim, Key & Eng. No., and Salesman. These all have what I would expect filled into each category, but the "Eng. No." is typed as "T-9L10". I know I have the original motor in the car, because the engine date code on the head deck is the same as what is on the Protect-O-Plate. This car came with a 350/300hp SB. Any idea what that code would mean?

The other is under "Factory or Dealer Installed Accessories". On the left column are all the options ordered on the car, but to the right on top are the words "Stereo Tape". Does that mean this car was ordered with a dealer installed 8-track?

Thanks for any insight...

I'd guess that's the other key code. Is there only one code in the key # box?

I'd have to see the invoice to comment on the option question.

I never thought of that, but that makes perfect sense. It's probably for the trunk key. Attached is a scan of the part of the invoice with the code. Note "Stereo Tape" very curious about that...

Without seeing the whole thing, it looks like they listed the options and just started a new column. So factory installed.

What was the dealer name? Shaver?

Sorry for the delay. The Dealer's name was "C" Thomas Chevrolet (formerly Baker Chevrolet), in Gary, IN.

Any pics of a dealer installed 8-track on a console Camaro? Would the Assembly manual show this?

Wait, thought you said "dealer" installed. Factory installed even better. So, would that be an in-dash radio combo, or under dash?

Yes, it's shown in the assembly manual. And I think there's some pics in some forum posts.

Here are two; The first one is from a 69 Vintage Certified L48 (15K original miles). The second one is from another Vintage Certified 69 L34 (24K original miles).

If you need additional pics I'm sure Steve (aka paceme) will help you out.

Thanks Steve!

Yep.. a 'top of the console' 8 trk player...   :)      just what a man needed in 1969, if he already had 'everything' else...  :)

Even by the mid-70's these 8-trk players were out of date.   I recall seeing the first one I'd ever seen in the late '70's or early 80's...  I was amazed that GM had put those on the option sheet...   :)    but they are very rare..  sorta like the Dodo bird.. :)

Not sure how anyone can have one of these cars and not have a copy of a corresponding AIM... ;)

Yes. the 8 track player was short-lived.  But there is a simple explanation as to why GM offered the option: Once again, Ford beat GM to the punch and rolled out the 8 track, invented by Bill Lear (as in Learjet), selling 65,000 of them in 1966. By 68 there were dozens of after market brands available.

BTW, I've still got my Iron Butterfly, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida, tape...  ;D ;D ;D
