That is a Holman-Moody built Challenger III.  The car has been restored by a fellow in Alabama, and was very pleased to see these great Jerry Melton period photos.

Unfortunately for the Challenger III (Falcon), it was not considered a production car or a sedan so they made it run as an A/Sports Racer. Hence it could wind up running against something like a big block McLaren or a Lola.

Thank you Jon...neat car..by the angle of the second picture looks like it would have been hard to see out of that back window and no passenger mirror...Scott

Waterford Hills 1969. I don't know the driver of the #1 Corvette but the #96 car is driven by Paul Van Valkenburgh.

Waterford Hills 1971. This is the Pontiac Tempest driven by Bob Tullius in the 1971 Trans-Am series however it looks
like it might be Pontiac engineer Herb Adams doing the driving here at the Waterford track.

I have a vague recollection that there was a husband and wife team that drove Corvettes at WH, but can't recall their names or whether they shared one car or each had one.

Robert, Maybe you're thinking of Tom Swindell and his wife Mary? They ran a white '62 which is currently owned by Franz Estereicher and a Stingray also. There are some photos of them in the Waterford Hills thread.

ah, a Cobra! As much as I liked my old camaros, there would be nothing a like a wind-in-the-face Cobra - no airbags, no modern electronic gizmos etc.

Anyone got a spare Factory Five kit they don't want? (I might put a 327 in it).

Waterford Hills 1971, Corvette Stingray #93.

Waterford Hills 1972, Three Corvettes running in a pack.

Waterford Hills 1972, The Mustang looks like it may be a car that ran in Trans-Am and the Javelin in the back may be ex-Penske.  ???

Waterford Hills 1972, A Stingray, a Lotus Super 7 and an early Mustang convertible. A Mustang with no roof or even a windshield just
looks strange to me. It obviously happened but I can't recall seeing another Mustang like this at the races back in the early '70s.

Waterford Hills 1972, A C-3 Corvette, car #37.

Fenders look wrong for ex-Penske Javelin but Boss 302 looks legit.

More from Kent Field, May 1964

Dick Doane's aluminum bodied "Chevette" sports racer.

This shot shows the small block Chevy nestled inside the Chevette's engine compartment.

Dick Doane was a well-connected Chevy dealer and successful Corvette racer.

This looks like another Chevy-powered sports racer but not the Chevette. Anyone know what it is?

Here's Doane's Chevette battling with the Dan Gerber Cobra.

Doane's Chevette broke a lap before the end of the race and Gerber's Cobra took the overall win.

VWs, Porsches and Corvairs are not the only production line cars with their engine in the back.
