67 Rs consol guage install

  I have a 67 ss rs clone ragtop.  I found an original set of console gauges this past summer and I would like to install them.  My car has never had the   console gauges so i need to install the wiring setup for this part.  Classic industries seems to have the wiring conversions i need although they tell me i have 2 options as far as this project goes. The first is to replace the entire underdash wiring harness so that it is compatible to the console gauge conversion wiring kit in their catalogue.   The other option is to just buy the console gauge conversion wiring kit and hard wire it to the existing underdash harness.   The car is complete and is beautiful.  I do not really want to pull out the underdash wiring harness as it works fine.  QUESTION    Has anyone out there done this before?  What are the trials and tribulations of such a project?  Thanks for any and all input.    Jim

Yes.  It's not too bad, but the way I did it was to take the front light harness out and cut it open, pull out the wires the kit said to, add the new ones and re-wrap it.  You have to pull out the speedo pod and do the same under the dash to add and remove wires that are needed and taken out.  I went back to idiot lights because that's the way my car came from the factory and had to take this conversion harness out.  It plugs in everywhere so it's not spliced or cut.  Looks just like when I bought it.  I don't know if it's the same for a 67 though.  If it is, I could save you some money.

Thanks for the reply 68z.  I just found out the repop tachs in the Classic Industries catalogue are not compatible to hei ignition systems, which my car has.  My next step now is to find a repop that is compatible or find an original tach and go from there.  I appreciate your response.  Any other idea?  jim

Well, I've got the original speedo and tach pod, but it's 68 and they are spendy.  My tach worked with the Pertronix I have, but I don't know much about the repops.

That's a good price.  Of course the one for mine is Z28/ L78 but a guy on e-bay wanted $1000 for one.

I had an orig 6k red line one and  nobody wanted it. Had it on ebay and camaros.net. I finally sold it at carlisle this past spring for 500. The guy that bought it was building a clone car

Prices have gone down a bit except for some of the really hard to find things and that cnjr guy on e-bay is living in a dream world for his stuff.

 :)I am interested in that gauge pluml78.   What makes one tach 5000 redline and the next one 55 or 6000.  Is it engine size as in 327, 350, big block or what. I would guess that orig gauge would be compatible to an hei ignition.  Jim

The reline has to do with application.  The solid lifter cars got the 6k tach and it goes down from there.

That's a big assumption. I don't *think* they are.

  I suppose that is a rather presumptuous (sp) guess on my part Kurt.  What does one do in my situation when you want to put a tach in a 67 that did not originally come with one and the repops or apparently origs are not compatible with a HEI system?   Jim

Have you tried TC?  I haven't been on there in a while, but it seems they were discussing things like that at times in the past when I was on there.

You can use the factory tach but if it works weird you will need to add a filter. Jim covers it in this tech article.
