I think you're right, Bob.  Tangerine Orange looks like the correct color.

From what i find, that color was not available for other Chevy models that year? I wonder where it came from and why. Also, the eBay car is a Norwood, and mine is LOS built 8 months apart.

This is the one Lucas Restorations did- as far as I remember they never found any remnants of stripes.

Funny how a 3 Owner car now becomes a 1 owner car.

Here's the listing from ebay a little more than a year ago when it was a 2 owner car- $50,000.

1968 Chevrolet Camaro Z/28 – The Real Deal

This is an original, documented, one owner 1968 Camaro Z/28. How do we know it’s one owner, you ask? The original Protect-o-Plate warranty card and book are still with this car.

The VIN of this rare Camaro is 124378N409412.

The block casting number is 3914678, which authenticates the engine block as one belonging to a 302 cubic inch 290 horsepower V8 intended for a 1968 Camaro Z/28. The engine deck, as you can see in the photos, is stamped with a partial VIN stamp that reads 18N409412, verifying that this DZ 302 engine belongs in this particular 1968 Camaro Z/28.

The Muncie M21 4-speed manual transmission mated to the engine is also original to the car. Its assembly date is P8C21, it sports a “660” case, and again the partial VIN of 18N409142 is stamped into the case as well. The 12-bolt posi-traction rear end has original 4.10 gears and an assembly date code of BV0321G, a casting date of B298, and a housing number of 860NF. It, too, is original to the car.

What really sets this car apart from the pack, aside from the fact that it’s only got 22,220 original miles, is its paint. The paint code was a special order, as evidenced by the “1001HA” code on the window sticker, as well as the “- -“designation for paint on the car’s original trim tag. This special order car was ordered and painted in a special hue called “Tangerine orange.” In addition to that, it is a real factory stripe delete car, and the paint on this car is original.

This car has been certified by Jerry MacNeish of Camaro Hi-Performance, INC – known worldwide as the authority on the 1967-1969 Camaro Z/28. It is a true survivor Camaro. The only changes from the day this car left the factory during the first week of April 1968 are minor. There is a Hurst shifter in between the bucket seats, and the smog pump, long known as a failure item and a concern on these cars, was removed sometime early in its life. Everything else is date-code correct for the car, making this quite possibly the most original Z/28 Camaro you will ever see.

712 interior may nix the Dale Armstrong car though.

Well, this partial former car was in Frederick, MD this weekend. Cowl only. No frame or anything else. Not sure why he had it there, maybe just a conversation piece. Trim tag is no longer attached.

Sorry I have not followed up on this. Yep, it was at the 2016 Nat's and I brought it as a conversation piece along with my unfinished 68 convertible. I think I did offer to sell it to one guy who passed on a great deal and story.

When I picked this up I removed the partial vin from the trunk (axle hump) and cowl as well as the TT. I did not want to be towing around a rental trailer full of partial cars for 1100 miles and have some overzealous POPO turn it into GTA. This was an eBay purchase, the owner lived in FL, the parts were in OK and everything was heading to SC. I had no title or even a bill of sale. All I had was a printout from my computer showing an eBay transaction. Call me paranoid, but I mailed the vins and TT home.

I have the cowl back to the shifter opening (Anything that showed color), the sub-frame with brakes, as well as the partial vins and TT. It proudly resides on the wall of my buddy's shop who likes to tell everyone he's storing a DANA for a friend. If there becomes a legal way to resurrect the vin plate I'd love to see this come back to life as a Safety (Tangerine) Orange Z/28, but for now it's just another internet story.
