Opinons on tires and wheels for my Camaro
« on: July 24, 2011, 11:33:25 PM »
After a long restoration my 69 is on the ground. It has Uniroyal Tiger Paw's on it. These are 42-year-old tires so I won't be driving on them. I need to do a second set of tires and wheels and originally thought I would put another set of XT wheel on it with some repop Goodyear’s. I have begun to rethink that solution and am now thinking that I should look at all my options.

The car is restored and bone stock but still maybe a set of after market/day two tires and wheels would look nice. Whatever I do I need to do it fast so more than likely a set of wheels that is being produced currently is what I need to use. Am open to anyone's suggestions. And no 22" wheels, 14" and 15" only :)

Your decision would be much easier if the Uniroyal Tiger Paw's were offered by suppliers. I feel your dilemma, choosing a set of tires is a tough call.

Here is a shot of the GT's Ed has on his Yenko. I also throw in a pic of Goodyear Wide Tread F70X14's. I really like the look of this tire. I also included a link you may have already read but just in case you haven't, there is some good information that I think applies to your car/tires.

I have lots of photos of Eddie's car it looks killer....

I should be at MCACN this year.

I like the idea of a matt grey center TT with machined lip

These are allways good. I have a set of these and a set of rallys to swap when I am in the mood.

For as much as you are going to drive that car you can drive on those tires. I have been doing it for years on tires 30 years old. No problems ever.

I had 2 of my 30 year old tires pop in the garage. Thank God I wasn't driving it. I agree with JohnZ...Joe

I just had to buy a whole set of 4 tires as one of the front tires got a sidewall hole in it.  These were radials and 20 years old, no longer made and I was very thankful it didn't happen as I was driving.

I wouldn't risk driving any car with 20-30 year old tires. That is just me. These tires are 42 years old so a huge difference between 30 and 42 years.... You get bonus points for original tires so that is why they are on the car, plus I love the Tiger Paws and they look cool:) I have 30 year old 19" NOS Goodyear bias plys on one of my 935's but they are just for display. Would never consider driving on them either and they are unfortunately not reproduced at this time so I run a 16" wheel on the back when I race. Forget the value of the car it is just too dangerous.

Based on the window sticker for the sister car shown in Jerry's book on page 117 (it is optioned exactly the same as my car) I possibly should have YJ rallys and not XT wheels. Not 100% sure but every other option on our cars is identical and they only ordered two COPO cars. So I am looking for a proper set and if I don't find some soon will go with some TT style wheels, grey centers with machine lip.

I appreciate the input. It helped my thought process.
