Firestone racing tires --- new reproduction
« on: June 11, 2011, 06:12:17 AM »
I heard very recently about Coker Tire doing reproductions of the old Firestone "Super Sports Indy" racing tires that were used on Trans-Am cars back in the classic '66-'72 era. I see they list a couple of sizes, one is a 9.20-15 and the other is a 12.00-15. It would be nice to have a few other size choices and they are pretty expensive but it's great to see them offered.

Over the weekend at the Monterey Historics, I saw Coker Tire's display of the new Firestone racing tires. Here are a few pics of the 12.00-15.

Below are some measurements (shown in red ink) taken off a new 9.20-15 Firestone, mounted on a 15x7" wheel, fully inflated and using a tube.
These measurements come in smaller than those indicated by Coker tire. I have not yet been able to measure a mounted 12.00-15 tire.

Pretty pricey, indeed. Are these meant for show-only, or are these fully engineered and competitive race tires?

Last time I checked, Coker tires were more into the "recreational re-creation" business, not the all-out, in-it-to-win-it competition business.

Thanks again for the news, Jon.

I don't know anybody racing on them. My assumption is that they are for restoration purposes and not for competition but I don't know that for a fact.

Yes, the Historic Trans-Am cars are running on Goodyear Blue Streaks.
