First Gen Hood Hinges
« on: May 21, 2011, 05:02:44 AM »
Does anyone know if there is any difference between 67 to 69 hood hinges besides maybe manufactures or some stampings. I have one set that has N style stampings and another that has double AA stampings.
Were the 2 gen hinges the same as first gen?
Can anyone suggest what type of lube/grease to use on freshly restored phosphated hinges
Also looking for a set of springs (2) for ZL/2 hood, 26 coils.
Thanks for the tips etc.

No difference between 67-69. I recall the shade of phosphate varied from grey to nearly black, most likely an acceptable variation in the plating process. The stampings are likely specific to a supplier, which could have changed over the many years GMPD inventoried them. Even in production there may have been multiple suppliers.

There are only 2 springs, 1 for SS hood, 1 for all others.

William,
Appreciate the response, suspicions confirmed. As to the springs I know 2 are require per hood and I require an original set of 2 hinge springs for the ZL/2 ducted hood 26 coils.
Thank you

I have a new set of NOS hood springs and hindges. The springs are the heavier ss spring. I paid 365.00 for them on E bay and I will sell them for what I paid. Still in the box.

Thanks anyway but those springs have too many coils for a cowl hood like our Z has.
Happy Turkey day to all :D

William and LM69Z28....... its my understanding that you use the same springs for the SS and ZL 2 hoods.
both the SS and ZL 2 hoods are heavier than the flat hood and you need the stronger springs to lift it and keep it up.

i have seen cars that originally had a flat hood with flat hood springs, with an SS or ZL 2 hood added, keeping the flat hood springs and they need a stick to keep the hood open.

No. The SS has added cast pot metal chrome pieces that add significantly more weight to the hood assembly so the SS has a special spring. The ZL-2 hood does not have any significant added weight (insulation is very light and the same amount of sheet metal) so it uses a standard production spring. This is widely accepted as correct.

I would agree. If you use the SS springs on the ZL-2 Hood, closing it is difficult and when opened it can pop right past the safety catch!
