Its a sad tale about Dale Phelon.
The auction house seemed to be very apprehensive about releasing any information about the car before the bidding began.
Maybe we will eventually see the car in the west coast group.....
How about it Robert? It would be nice to rekindle an old friendship with that car!

Robert,

Lance Smith owns the second 2nd-gen Camaro that Dick Hoffman built and raced during the '72 Trans-Am season.

Did this car sell?  When I ran it in 80 it was slightly rebodied in the front to look like a 75.  The engine was a 327 out to 331, still with stock cylinder heads, and for some reason had been built with big block rods.  It handled very well but had some brake issues with the silicone fluid of the day - especially at Westwood with a tight hairpin at the end of the back straight - the pedal would start to go down to the floor and I had to pump it. I was told it was related to compressibility of the fluid?  We did have a water injection system for the front brakes which helped cooling.

We did not have the correct rear axle ratio - especially for Hallet and Laguna - should have had a 4:56. After missing most of the qalifying at Laguna because of shifter problems, I did a few warn-up laps on the Sunday morning and got into the 14's - would have been in the top ten Q group for the T/A race in 70 with that old car - it was way out-dated for the T/A in 80 which was run for Category I cars.

Robert,

My understanding is that the car sold for $48K but maybe somebody knows different. Below is a picture of the car from the late '70s when Cam Champion owned it. The second photo is from 1991 when an early style front end had been put back on the car.

Have just learned that Bob Morton (Seattle) will put up for sale the ex Kenny Deckman #18 67 camaro - he is the 2nd owner since the mid eighties.  Kenny entered 19 T/A races from 67 to 77 according to ultimateracinghistory.com  It was also raced in the PNW with the ICSCC group.  I last saw Kenny racing the car at Pacific Raceways in 1980.  This is probably one of the most original early T/A cars you will find.

He also is selling a 67 SCCA  A sedan that he restored - history unkown but out of CA I believe.

Bob says after 40 years of racing it is time to call it a day.

Nice picture of the car. Thanks for posting it. Will you have it returned to that paint scheme by then?

Does anyone know if the Kar Kraft 70 Mustang T/A car raced by Peter Gregg in 71 was sold at the Mecum Monterey auction?  and if so, for how much?  This car crunched my passenger door in at the 71 Lime Rock T/A, but not on the track.  After the race was over, Peter ran into me in the paddock not looking where he was going.
