69 L48 Starter

I am trying to find a Starter for a 69 L48 (350/300HP) auto. The part # is 1108420. One other catch...it needs to be dated prior to 12A (1st wk of Dec. 68).

Should be 1108338 starter (Powerglide) or 1108420 (Turbo 350).

(Assuming you just made a typo and need the 1108420...)

Any idea when the change happened on the production line?

I am not really sure when the change over occurred or if there was one (although you would think there was since the problem was brought to GM's attention on Dec. of 68). Here is a good discussion referencing these starters. Down towards the bottom of the thread you will find starter usages confirmed by Kurt. As long as your car and starter application fall within these... it should be fine.

I believe I have the original starter for my L48 TH350 combo, 420 dated 9E12. (engine assenbly of T0525)
I have seen conflicting reports as to what the car should have come with from the factory, and have been told the 420 was a dealer replacement for the 361.
Until recently I havd never seen the technical bulletin
Guess I no longer need to search for that proper date coded 361

I think the credit should go to Jonsey for supplying us with the service tech bulletin.

Here's where it gets complicated...or maybe not...since the 420 & the 338 were replacements for "Hot Cranking" problems associated with the 361 it would be difficult for anyone to say, regardless of dates on these replacements, if these would be correct applications for anyone trying to assemble their L48's with "#'s parts"...just one guys opinion.

Do you have any information with regards to Chris's question? I think his question would also have to include the rest of the replacement starters. In addition, do you think the correct date as it relates to the replacements & the build date of the car pose any issues for a numbers car?

That TSB indicate early, so clearly before Dec 23. But they don't mention a transition date and I haven't seen it in other docs either.

Thanks again. Still a tough call since we don't have a transition date. I think the safest assumption would be (at least in my case) to find a replacement that is prior to Dec 23. At least until a transition date has been established.

I would certainly like to here from judges, officials, or other core members with your recommendations.

Marty you should be able to find a local rebuilder who can rebuild any original starter to higher standards. Years ago I had the 6 volt starter on a truck rebuilt as  a 12 volt starter. Then you could have the required performance with a numbers correct starter.
