67 12 bolt posi
« on: January 28, 2011, 02:46:50 AM »
I scored a 67 (i believe) 12 bolt posi at the Turkey rod run this year for $200. My question is, is it rare enough that I would be better off selling it and buying a 69 housing or offering it up for trade for a 69 unit. I know that I can change the spring perches and run it with no issue (after rebuild of course) and I don't really care about dates but many do. I just have enough respect for a rare or hard to find date code that I would hate to use it where it doesn't matter if it is a rare housing. Not looking to make a profit just end up with a 12 bolt. So what do ya'll think, is it rare or hard to find?

67 Camaro 12 bolt axles are hard to find. Many are getting modified for early Novas. If it is a posi with 3:55, 3:73 or lower gears it is valuable. Does it have the T-bar bracket?

Nothing wrong with making a few bucks on it to get into a '69 axle.

I believe it is a 2.73 gear which is no big deal to me as it needs to be built anyway. The carrier is not diiferent is it? I don't believe it has the traction bar bracket if that is what you are referring to, but I can double check when I get home. Passenger side lower slightly forward location? Got a picture?

That's pretty good, you posted the picture before I ask.

No offense but Chevys are so dull with their all black suspension.  ;D

I think there were 3 different carriers, and the 2.73 carrier was not compatable with the more desireable high performance ratios. Of course if I'm wrong, someone will post the truth

It doesn't have the traction bar bracket but it appears on quick inspection it may have had something welded to it at one time. I will check further tomorrow, I will also check the gears again. Where are the date codes on the housing I will double check that as well.

Thanks. So it was for a 68 model year. Who in their right mind or what package would have had a 2.73 with a posi no less? Just don't make sense the way I think. If I understood an earlier post the carrier is pretty much useless since it wont hold a steep gear. Is there a spacer available and if so how reliable/durable are they?

The 2.73 could be had with just about any engine if you pressed hard enough, but typically, the "economy ratios" of the L30, L48, L35 and L34 engines had the 2.73 available. Heck, with a few engines you could even get a 2.56 ratio!

What all gears will fit the carrier?

The 2 series carrier will support the 2.29 (1969 full size cars), 2.56 and 2.73.
