'68 RS - Has been sitting in a barn since 1988.
« on: September 22, 2010, 07:45:45 PM »
Thought I'd share some pictures ....its the closest thing to an unmolested time capsule I've ever had the chance to pick up.

I found this in 2002.   I was out spraying fields in a BIG-A (I live in farm country, very rural), stopped for a potty break behind a barn, and happened to see something through the cracks.

Neat!  I popped the hood and looked inside, it was in very good shape, quite dusty though.  Numbers matching 327, powerglide, buckets with a console shift, cool stuff!

I checked on the ownership of it.  And found out it had to be moved soon due to the estate being settled, since it was only stored there by relatives.

The Camaro was put in there in 1988, after a mild encounter between the left quarter and a post, on a snowy day.  Apparently it was decided that it needed to NOT be driven in the snow any more, due to Camaro's tendency to SUCK in the snow (original owners words, not mine) and that's when it was stuffed in the barn.  Been there ever since..... till I came along in 2002.

I've had fun bringing it back to life, and cleaning the old girl up.  It runs and drives very nicely actually, I've  had thoughts of doing PowerTour with it as is.

Just thought I'd share.  If anyone wants a specific picture, just let me know.

Later.

Wow!  Nice find!   :)

It looks like the headlight covers still retain some of their original "chrome".  Your car might have some important data for the CRG "1968 Camaro Rally Sport Grilles" report...

Any chance you could post a photo of the cowl tag?

Thanks in advance and welcome to CRG!

Wow, barn finds are still out there! I noticed that the bottom sill is body color. I have seen some painted black. When are they suppost to be painted black, anyone?

Nice find....I do notice that the black paint at the fire wall continues over the top cowel area. I thought the factory painted up to the edge

Thanks.   After meeting and talking to the original owner, I highly doubt that anything has been changed from original.  He didn't really sport that type of personality.

The grill & light covers do show signs of having a chrome-like coating at one time.  Interesting stuff.

I've been looking for a forum like this with knowledgeable originality oriented people.   I may have to sell this car in the near future and would like to see it go to someone who appreciates it, not just wanting to hack it up to go faster like most of the locals want to do.

Can you post a close-up pic showing the chrome on the grille?
Also can you post a pic the metal Protect-o-plate? Is the dealer listed on the POP?
Thanks!

Looking at the cowl tag pic, I don't see it going onto the horizontal surface. That's very typical. Body color first, then firewall black-out, with a fade between the two. No hard masking lines.

Here are a couple of links to photos showing the cowl area paint on my original '68 Z28.

That's the one thing I was disappointed in with this car.   I didn't find the POP in with the manuals.   I've heard that some dealers kept them On-site for the convience of the customer, maybe that's where this one went?  We'll probably never know....

I do have a copy of the original title though. (Ohio will not let us keep the originals.)
I'll have to get it out and get the dealership name from it.

The POP wasn't in the back of the warranty booklet? Does the warranty booklet have the car's VIN stamped thru the edge of the booklet?

The VIN is stamped/punched in the edge of the whole book, but 1/3 or so of the last page where the POP would be is missing, seems to be on a perforated line as if it were removed intentionally.

The VIN on the book matches the car, by the way.

Bet someone didn't want there name on the POP so they yanked the page instead of pulling off the dyno tape.
What about the facing page? Is there an imprint of the POP there?

Wow!! my mouth waters!! A classic 'whatsinyourpaddock' find. :)
Nothing like an original, regardless that it's a little neglected and ratty.
