Sub-frame to Radiator Support mtg. holes-Front one ever used?
« on: August 10, 2010, 10:10:04 PM »
The top front section of the sub-frame has three holes of which normally the middle one is utilized for mounting the radiator support. Today I noticed on our sub-frame it surely appears the front hole location was used. You can clearly see where the washer/rubber mount were as that area is pretty clean but slight pitting around the area that the washer/rubber mount did not cover. Sure they put three holes there for a reason so can only assume some cars had different holes used for some reason. Anybody run into this or? How did they determine what hole to use? Started to mount the front fenders and placed the rad. support in the middle mtg. hole but noticed the rad. support seemed to be leaning forward and then noticed it sure looks like the front mtg. holes were used.
thanks in advance,
Chick

The front holes are used on mine. My car has never been taken apart so rest assured that that is how the car was factory assembled.

Mine ['68 model] is also using the front holes, however a '69 chassis I have seems to have used the middle holes.
Impossible to use the wrong holes as the inner guard holes won't match to the rad support as well as lower valance bracket.
On the assembly line, the entire front clip was pre-assembled and moved onto the chassis/body as a complete assembly. The radiator support would then automatically line up with the correct holes.

69'ers, can you confirm, middle holes or front holes?

Could the other holes have been used for other mopdels with the sam subframe, but different sheetmetal like the firebird or nova?

The top front section of the sub-frame has three holes of which normally the middle one is utilized for mounting the radiator support.

Sorry about the above statement as that is untrue........ Completed searches both here and the camaro.net and everything I found was the front hole has been the only one used. As mentioned, maybe the Nova, firebird, or for some type of location during sub-assembly or???? GM had a reason to put those 3 holes in there :)

For what it's worth, a 68 Firebird I am working on is using the middle holes.

Well that throws a spanner in the works! :) Seems to be in contradiction to Frank350 and I would have thought for sure that 68 firebird would be the same as 68 camaro  ???

So it seems the 69 chassis I have was originally from a Nova - middle hole used and a elongated rear hole on the LH side

@L78Steve; I also have this problem with my Nova 69. how sure are you that the Camero and Nova differ in this?

The Subframe with the elongated hole on the drivers side is for a late build '69 Camaro or '70 Nova subframe.

Warren, thanks for your post, it has prompted my memory. That's exactly what my research from years ago had led me to, though I didn't know about 'late' 69 Camaro.
I thought the elongated hole was a good indicator of it belonging to 70 Nova only.

Here's the late 69 subframe. It is a late Sept 69 car, but I don't know when the change occurred. I'd suspect August.
