68 Z/28 01B with Dist. 1111266 7A25
« on: July 09, 2010, 01:27:54 AM »
We just started to restore our 68 Z28 built 01B. We have owned this car for almost 30 years and knew way back when that it had it's born with engine, trans. and rear. Had even checked out other items like the dist., alternator, etc.... The only thing changed was the water pump and the ex. manifolds had been removed as the first owner told me he purchased headers. Didn't a lot of us put them on way back when! ;D
Now where it seems strange is the time lapse between a few parts like the distributor and alternator. By the way, everything else seems logical and within the normal time frames for parts except the aforementioned two. The distributor is a 1111266 which I always felt was correct since our 68Z is a early build. Not sure how many 68's were built before ours but Jerry M and others have stated they are somewhat rare. Anyway, the dist. has a 7A25 date code (Jan. 25, 1967). I know they were not utilizing FIFO (first in, first out) but wow. Then the alternator is a 1100814 with of course the correct pulley but with a date of 7H10 (Aug. 10, 1967). These parts were part of the car again 30 years ago so I believe them to be original. We are doing the restoration for a trailer queen ride and some showing so my concern is a judge is going to say "no way" those date coded parts are too old to be on there.   Just looking for some information to support that this was possible or vice versa (no way)!
Anyone else have/seen this much difference?

For the distributor, I would think it would have to match the engine build date, not the body.?.?  They came w/ the engine.

Sorry about the screwed up first attempt....

Chick...

I have an 02D Z'ed (with most of the drivetrain date cast and assembled in late Dec '67) also with a '266 stamped 7A25 and that is considered normal in this particular model situation.
The '266 distributors were batch produced with a couple of different date stampings of which the 7A25 was one. In '67 they obviously made more than they used since that RPO model wasn't well advertised and therfore probably didn't live up to sales expectations in its first year and remaining units in the bins were used in the early '68 production run models of which mine and certainly yours qualify.
The 266's are considered quite rare since there weren't all that many made and for the numbers guys with the rare '67 (and almost as rare) early '68 models, they they pull in big $$'s.
EBay has the occasional unit up for bidding (as well as lots of fakes) with staggering results - so if you're willing to drop in a generic small block distributor you may be able to fund a good part of your restoration from the replacement and sale of your 266 unit - especially if it still retains its long slot 532CCW point cam assembly - just joking...

No worries Chick.  My 02C '68 Z/28 has the exact same distributor and alternator with the same date codes as your Z/28!  In fact, your question is very similar to my first post here on CRG...

Thanks for the info Randy and Paul! And neat to learn quickly of two other early built 68 Z/28's.  Might be asking my fellow z/28 brothers you something when a question comes up....... ;D

This is another one of those learning trends.  I just restored an 1111266 7A25 for a customer with an early '68 Z28.  My white survivor as the 7G20 in it but I suspect that either date can turn up in an early production '68 Z28.  There is also a 7B9 1111266 that I have in my data base.
