Cowl tag help?
« on: April 29, 2006, 08:55:54 PM »
I just found a 1968 z28. I have started the research process and found that the cowl tag says  Z2 no dashes for the paint code. So i asumed the car had a black top, but they are no studs for the top and no indication of them from the inside? The car has been setting since the early eighties and was repainted nad sriped to the metal. Could this have been a black stripe indication?

Nope.  Stripes were not shown on the cowl tag.  Stipe colors, black or white was color dependent.

2 is for the black vinyl top.  It would have been easy to remove the top...

i just finished pulling the cowl panel off the car and the entire panel underneaith looks to have been spayed white, the car has been painted at least 4 different times. I have found several traces of the green on the outer cowls and under all of the trim. but no signs of stripes anywere. The car looks to have been striped to metal at one time. The weird thing is the green paint on the back of the wiper panel cowl, but no white overspray. There was a stripe delete available in 68? i have found tons of weird things with this car.

How do you know the panels are the original ones to the car?

If its been painted before, many parts could be from other cars.

How sure are you that its even a real Z28?   1968 is the hardest year to document.

I am very lucky to have the numbers matching engine with the car. The car has not been on the road since 1988 acording to the inspection sticker. I assumed that because the car had been painted so many other colors, and under the cowl panel was still green that it might have been the original.
