1969 396 power steering hose question
« on: June 07, 2010, 05:17:42 AM »
I'm replacing the PS hose on my 69 396 05C car. Most of my car is original, but I see the SAE J188 spec on the old hose - I'm not sure that was on the original hoses.

The old hose is different than the replacement. The old one exits the back of the pump at 60 degrees, goes under the engine mount, and to the ps box. Fits great.
The replacement is not even close, it has a S-bend on the pump end.
Anyone have an original 69 BB with PS that can tell me which is on their car?

Following thru the books, there are two V8 hoses in the AIM - 3964564 (was 3953254) for 302 and 350, 3964565 for other V8's.
The 11/68 parts book list the 3953254 part for 350 and 396.  Later parts books list 3964564 for all V8's.  That makes sense.
But then I see 7811628 part in the 12/71 parts book that's only 69 396.  Where did that come from? Was there a different 396 part for real?

Nice thing is that the replacement should fit OK, just not as clean and direct as what was on the car.
Thanks!

Hmm, wonder if my old hose is the 67-68 hose? There's supposed to be two different 67-68 ones, but everyone only sells one version these days:

The exposed rubber section on mine is 19" long btw, if someone has one of these laying around to compare.

The exposed rubber section on my 67-68  hose is 18 1/2". Does not have s-bend, looks like the one ricks sells.
The two hoses you indicated to would be for v-8 and l-6 correct?

That length is real close to my hose. I'm guessing that's what it is - the bends look close.

Per my 11/68 parts book, for 67-68, there's 2 V8 pressure hoses.
One for 67 327 and 350. One for 67 396 and all 68 V8's.

KurtS,
The 69 AIM N40 A9 shows your replacement hose to be correct for a SB.The one rick has is for a BB, smaller s bend.
I think the the s bend was an attempt to gain a little power steering fluid cooling.
Also note the sleeves on both lines. I see your replacement has the sleeve and ricks still does not have the sleeves.
Sleeves are not repo-ed.

I looked at my last evening & it has that wild bend like the picture. That bend also might be there so the hose(s) can be put back into the bracket on the motor mount pedistal inside by the oil pan. Mine matched the original when it was replaced...Joe

11/68 691A Canadian parts book:
3901351 . . . . . 67 327 & 350 eninge
3912551 . . . . . 67 396 engine, 68 8 cyl

Interesting, normally the US and Canadian books agree. But here they don't.  My 10/68 P&A34 is the same as yours. And both agree with the 67/68 AIM's. And I think they are right and the Canadian book is wrong...

Big Iron,
Don't read too much into the AIM sketch. Those are drawn slightly different, but they should be the same since they are the same part #.

Joe,
Thanks! Especially since yours is a late car.

Hope its OK to dig up an old post but this is all I could find on PS hose sleeve. I dint like the available PS HP hose and found an NOS hose that has the correct protection sleeve like the originals. I have been searching for this sleeve for the low pressure hose and came across this Mustang part that is a perfect match. One piece is long enough for both PS hoses for $20. I will post pictures of my original hose markings.  George.

George,
Great find. You have no idea how many restored 1st gens. that do not have sleeves on there P/S hoses.
Looking at the markings on your P/S hose is there any more markings after the USR - ? Strange that it ends in an - .
What color and size is the lettering.
Do you have any markings on the return hose?
Again, great find. ;D

Bob, That picture is of the return LP hose. I have been looking for other examples of original hose markings but haven't found much yet. If I can confirm this is original I intend to measure and order up a roll marker.I believe the "R406" designates the type of hose made by "USR" US Rubber. If others could check their hoses and report that would be great. I don't have a great picture of my HP hose so I'll take it off and retake pictures. Here is the HP hose. George

Better pictures of the LP & HP hose markings. HP hose is an NOS hose I bought did not come on my car.   George

Here is  a photo of mine showing both the HP and LP hoses have the protective sleeves. Since they are still on the car I can't get a good look at the lettering. At the pump the HP hose with the crimped fittings have the s curve while the LP hose with the clamps exit the pump and angles down about 60 deg. The more I learn about my car the more I find out how original it is. I don't think the engine has ever been out of the car.

Kurt,
This is my 11C build 69 396 so I am not sure if it should have the 67-68 pn 3912552 others posted above or if that would be the same as your 05C build car? I hope the info I described above about how they fit at the back of the pump helps.
