3858403 BELLHOUSING
« on: May 18, 2010, 04:26:55 PM »
I'VE BEEN LOOKING FOR A 3858403 BELLHOUSING FOR SOME TIME AND I'VE NOTICED A DIFFERENCE IN THE CASTING STAMPING, SOME HAVE THE 'GM' LOGO AND THEN THE NUMBER, SOME DON'T HAVE THE 'GM' LOGO AND THE STAMPING LOOKS DIFFERENT. CAN ANYONE TELL ME WHAT TO LOOK   FOR AS FAR AS PERIOD DATING STAMPINGS? IT'S FOR A 68 Z/28. TY, PETE.

My original 1968Z housing has a large "7" above the housing number and the only "GM" is in the center of the housing above the machined flange. The two small circles below the housing number are supposed to be other casting codes.  Don't know for sure, but it seems to me that the housings with the "GM" stamped with the housing number only appear on earlier years.....I could be wrong on this.  See signature for my car build date.

Pete -

The original bellhousing in my 02C LOS '68 Z/28 is the exactly the same as the one in Jerry's 07C NOR '68 Z/28.  I found the cast "GM" logo where Jerry described after crawling under the car with a mirror.  I've attached below a photo I found on the web of what Jerry's and my Zs casting numbers look like...

Thanks guys; I understand that the markings on the bellhousing should match the markings on the M20 trans, is that correct, month and week? What does the large '7' represent in the picture? Pete

My O4A 68 Z/28 bell housing looks just like the one in the pictures above. I don't know about matching the markings on the trans. I will try to check tomorrow or Friday and look to see what I can find.

The bellhousing and transmission will not have any matching dates or markings - the bellhousing was installed on the engine at the engine plant, and the transmission was assembled to the engine at the car assembly plant.

Mine also is a NOR build, and the difference in the vins is 5795, Divide that by 900(average units per day) makes our Z's 6 days apart. And we're even closer being Z's. So we could be cousins??? What color is yours? Mine is Rally Green w/white stripes and black interior!
