Did ALL 69' R/S Z/28's have to have the X33 code? Cowl Hood
« on: April 10, 2010, 10:23:55 PM »
I was just told that there is NO X77 R/S Z/28's. And that all real R/S Z/28's had to have the X33 code??? And if I see an X77 car with that option it is fake. What the heck, did I not know this, or did I forget this info. Is this guy wrong? Am I losing it?

Also, could somebody please forward me the picture, or add it to this question of the yellow Cowl hood that shows a real Chevrolet make. It was on a thread a few days back. Someone was asking how to tell the difference between real and after market. And some one posted a side ways picture of a hood. It has certain lines in it that show factory make. I think it was yellow. I punched 20 different things in the search box and could not find it...Thanx guys.....

X77 cannot be an RS. All RS cars included the Z21 style trim on the exterior of the car. X77 didn't include the style trim, it was the base coup like X44. So yes all real RS Z/28's in 69 had to be X33's unless they were LA built, or built before the X codes went into use.

More on the X codes.

http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#XnnCodes

Rally Sport (Z22) was an appearance only option that was available on all models in 67-69. It consists of concealed headlights with a different grille and back-up lights under the rear bumper and included the Z21 style trim package.

Sauron327 ya got me. I don't know what I did wrong. I was punching in everything every which way. Oh well, got the pictures.

SO ggtsvnv...So now I know that all X33's {norwood} cars would need the X33 to be an R/S. But I am a little confused. So are you saying that an LA built COULD be an R/S? The guy that gave me the info said that ONLY X33 cars could be R/S period and all others were fake. But there is no X33 out of LA. What's it called in LA? I know when the X codes started. So could there be some R/S out of LA before the X codes?

I just knew that I have seen LA built cars with the R/S option that seemed to be original and factory. .....Danny

So are you saying that an LA built COULD be an R/S?

Yes, LA built lots of RS/Z's, just like Norwood did, but there's nothing on an LA cowl tag to tell you if it's an RS or if it's a Z/28; Norwood cowl tags didn't show if it was a Z/28 either, prior to the X-codes. Neither plant's tag ever showed if the car was an RS.

And after the introduction of the x codes at Norwood, there were codes that did not have style trim (x44, x55, x66 and x77) and could not be rs cars.

I have a 12B LA build RS Z28 that I've own since the 70's. It's original with no X code.

Yes that is what I'm saying, like John stated L.A. didn't use X codes ,so you could have a R/S Z/28 from L.A. or Norwood before the use of X codes. Hope it helps :)

'69 L.A. Cars: There was never anything on the cowl tag to indicate if it was a Z/28 or an RS, and X-codes were never used on L.A. cars. You have to use other "clues" to determine if it was originally a Z/28 or an RS, or both.

'69 Norwood Cars: Prior to X-codes, same as above. After X-codes (12B), Z/28's were either X33 (with style trim) or X77 (without stlye trim). There was no code on the cowl tag for RS. If a Z/28 was also an RS, it had to be an X33, as RS included style trim.

The ZL2 cowl hood and D80 spoilers were separate independent options; neither had anything to do with Z/28, SS, or RS (until April '69, when D80 became part of the Z/28 package).
