1969 Camaro RS Tire size
« on: April 03, 2010, 08:14:15 PM »
I have purchased a 1969 Camaro RS recently and I'm looking to improve the look of the car with 18' or higher wheels and 235 or higher rubber. I'm not really into 60's corvette rims currently on it or going back to stock, but everything I‘ve read on this sight is showing a 17” rim with 215’s on them being the maximum size. I have read the back can go to 255 or even 275 but I’d like to keep the front and back the same (just a personnel preference for the look). As far as I know the suspension is stock. When looking at wheels and rims on tire sales sites they will sell you anything but I need to know what actually works. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You won't really make the car look better with those kind of wheels in my opinion!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Any car from this this era should have the rally wheels or Torque Thrust wheels, Cragar Mags and the like. That's what makes the muscle car look.   Those wheels you want to use will make the car look like a pimp mobile.  I'm thinking most will agree with me.  But there are exceptions.  It's your car you make it what you want.

No offense, I have to go with Bjv69ss on this one...but then again, I have never gotten the appeal of the whole resto-mod concept on any level, especially the extreme examples

Your car is beautiful.  The wheels are not so...again... it's just an opinion.  Your car should always be what you want it to be and not what someone else thinks it should be.

I Know a lot of camaro owners love the stock or cragar rims but I prefer the larger rims on the older cars and I’ve owned a 1970 dodge dart with 17’s a 1968 Delmont 88 with 20’s a 1969 GMC ½ tonne with 16” and I currently own a 1972 GMC ½ tonne with 18’s and now the 1969 camaro and I have never had one person ever say to me I’ve ruined the look because of the rims I installed. I’ve always received the thumbs up for a cool looking vehicle. Don’t get me wrong I do like to see the stock car look but it’s just not my thing. I’m more into the FOOSE looking redesigned old vehicles. I see I have a lot of replies but still not the info I was originally looking for, so dose anyone know the max size of tire? By the way charley cool looking ride.

You'll find the info you need in the above link in the Wheels and Tires forum. That site(TC) is more inclined to assist you in heavily modified first gens.

I have a 67 that I put Foose 18 x 10 with Micky Thompson 26 x12x 18, and 18 x 8 with Micky Thompson 26 x 10 x18 on the front, no rubbing or other problems at all. I also prefer the stock look......... but a change once in a while for a saterday cruise is nice.

I know how you feel, been there done that! :) I went from Corvette Rally Wheels, that came with the car from the pre owner in the US, to 18" Eagle Alloys and now back to the original 14" steel swheels with dog dish and F70-14 Firestone tires!! I get a lot more positiv comments with my 14" steel wheels now then with the 18" bling-bling when the Hugger is at exhibitions!! I think it´s up to you and it´s so easy to change looks just by shifting wheels!!  ;) ...I really loved the bling-bling too, now when i see the pics....hmmm.... :P But it didn´t ride wery well the 2" dropped springs and 245/40-18!!

Charley,

For my restored '69Z, I prefer the 100% stock look but I really like what you have done with your car - a very clean look and the rims and tires look great.

That's what great about our hobby...there are many different approaches to how we do our cars.  Everything from outstanding attention to stock details to outstanding resto-mods, most of which can easily out-run my stock 302, with their aftermarket AC on.

Zoatus,

When I am not showing my car, I use the Corvette 15 x 8 Rally rims (closer to stock look) with 245-60's on the rear and 235-60's on the front.  They fit fine and ride much better than the original/repro stock E70 x 15 bias-ply tires.  I think you can fit up to a 255-60 on the back. This is about as wide as you can go without rubbing.  You will need to cross ref the new metric tire size and aspect ratios to what I have listed, and be careful with the rim off-set.

Since I was a kid I’ve loved the ‘67 – ‘69 Camaros but thought the wider Corvette Rally rims and wider tires give the car a more “muscular” look.  Here is mine with its “cruzing shoes” on.  Sometime I use the stock “hi-top” center caps, other times I switch to the ’67 flat caps that accentuate the deeper 15 x 8 rims.

Follow your heart…they are all cool!

Well I’ve driven my 69 for the first time and found the corvette rims with 15” 235 BF goodrich tires are rubbing in the rear, I was quiet surprised when I hear others with 255 and so forth on them. Is it my rims not being the proper rim for the car or what? When buying the car I was informed the rear end had new axels installed (4.11) but I can’t see that effecting the position of the tires in the wells. I’m going to take a hard look and make sure my axel hasn’t shifted but what I’ve could see so far it looks fine. I’m holding off buying tires until I can figure this out. I think going any smaller on the rear will really change the look of the car. When i get a chance I'll post a picture of the now and then later the after look you guys can decide if is better or not.

What Corvette riims do you have? There were three different widths and offsets of Corvette rally wheels from '67-82.
