stereo controls in floor console
« on: March 01, 2010, 06:42:12 PM »
I have a tough question for the group.

I am installing stereo controls in the console glove box door of my 68 (RPO U51?). I need to drill a hole in the wall of the glove box to allow the control cable to pass through it. Can anyone tell me the correct size and location of the hole? I know that it is in the right side wall ner the rear but I don't know the size or correct location.

Thanks in advance, Mike.

I beleive it is in the RPO U79 sheets for the multiplex radio.  I know theres an illustration of one in the 69 8 track RPO pages in the 69 AIM.

Not so tough as I thought! You guys are great.

I have the assembly manual and found the info right where Rat Pack said it would be....U57 sheet A3. I guess I just overlooked it.

THanks again, Mike.

I have another question about the console mounted stereo radio controls.  Do any of you out there remember what the green stereo indicator light looked like when lit? I am told that it showed a chevy logo. Is it a bowtie? Is the center lit and outline dark or visa versa?

I'd love to see a photo of one but that's probably a long shot and I'd appreciate it if anyone could describe it from memory.

Here's a photo of the control panel on the Estes '68 with multiplex.

Rohan - When you post, just below the typing window, there's a line that says Attach; click on the "Browse" button on the right, navigate to where you have your photos stored, find the photo you want to upload, and click on "Open". When you click on "Post", your photo will show up with your post. If you click on "Preview" first, that will verify that your photo will show up when you post. Any image you post must be 150KB or less, no more than 4 images per post.

Rohan and JohnZ thanks for the replies. I have received pics of the light from a member here (thanks Marty) and found that there is the word "stereo' and the chevy chevron on the stereo indicator which I don't think I'm going to be able to duplicate. . The lamp that I have is similar to the original but the lens is just plain green.

What I'm doing is building a reproduction of the Camaro console stereo controls from a 1968 Impala under-dash multiplex unit. The controls are built and tested working and now I'm working on points for style. I've found knobs that are very close to the originals and have a friend that says that he can silkscreen the labels onto a faceplate but I'm stuck on teh stereo indicator lens.

I've attached a couple of photos of shat I have so far.

Rohan:

Could you please take some measurements from the square control panel on your console door? I'd love to know the square size of the panel itself and the height of the letters of the words "VOLUME" "TONE" etc. I have a friend who can silk-screen the part for me.

Rohan:

I'm going to try to extrapolate the dimensions from your nice close-up photo of the plate. Knowing that the holes are 7/16" I should be able to scale things in photoshop.

Also I'd be glad to pass a plate on to you at my cost if I can get some repros made. If the guy can do a nice job of it I'm going to have a half dozen or so made.
