earliest 69 ZL2 hooded car? earlier that 12E?
« on: January 28, 2010, 03:26:25 AM »
I noticed this car on ebay (below) with rare ZL2 hood, has a very early date. Could this be an example earlier than the 12E earliest example ever seen?
My guess this car had to be built in the second week of december (12B?).
by the way, this is the second california built L78 I have seen with the heavy duty radiator as an added cost item (w/ documentation), (and the car has the 410 rear end). Interesting it is not the curved neck version on this car.

Black 69L78. 4:10, RS/SS/ZL2, 'black painted tail panel different than body','red hockey stripe w/ v-top exception'
Blue 68Z28. 4:10, Kustom 'tunnel tube' headers, Nickey sold.

Thats an 11D car, based on a VIN of 9L510365.  Seeing it was built the same week, or at most 1 week after the announcement of the hoods availability was announced by GM (and it has a full width rear spoiler that didn't appear for another 3 months) I would hazard to guess its not original to the car.  Which then throws the "invoice" under suspicsion, which inturn throws the whole cars originality under suspicsion.

That invoice is clearly a fake.
You could not order the HD radiator on a Z or a 396 car.

Well from a back yard rookie point of view.....That sheet is too nice, with WAY to evenly layed browning. I would have the 4 X's tested to check the age of the ink. If it's about a few years old then bingo! Of course, they could have a pen from the 60's that they are using to show aged ink. My other trick is smell. I have smelled many of these so called original invoices and build sheets. The original ones have this certain smell of age, and mildew, and must. And if I don't get that smell, I would think twice. But ya gotta have the nose for it. When I see those guys with documentation schrink wrapped in plastic. I have them cut it open so I can smell it. Just say'in, that's what I have done in the past. And it works pretty well. It is hard to get that aged paper smell. Very close to an old newspaper, but not quite. Anyway, looks too good to me...Danny

The relay for the cowl is in the wrong location according to the assembly manual too.

Has it ever been noted on ZL2 cars that they put them way up there?

Has bright pedal trim and wood grain accents part of Z23? But shouldn't it also have trim piece above glove box, grab handle, and Camaro emblem close to ash tray if Z23?

He states it has all orig interior but it is pretty clear he has crappy repo door panels so what else is not correct. If it was really a survivor why is the fan shroud replaced, the cowl induction seal replaced with a inside out one, where did the smog go ?

All 68 and 69  Big blocks got smog pumps and AIR injector tubes.  Only small blocks and L6's with auto transmissions escaped from the factory without the smog equipment.

I guess my memory has findly went kaput. I ask Jerry about a pic in his book and I "thought" he said small blocks with autos and 396 cars didn't get the smog. My bad Charley. Didn't want to pick on anybody, please accept my apology. I'll start writing this stuff down if I can't do better than that.

When you buy a new one they come setup that way. Hard to explain but it is kind of abnormal to take it and roll it inside out so most people just stick it on and figure it is just another crappy repo part
