Original Exhaust & Clamps - 67 SS350 Conv.
« on: January 07, 2010, 04:26:31 PM »
What is the correct exhaust system and clamps for my 12D 67 RS/SS L48 4spd Conv.?

It is listed as a dual 2" for the L48 on the website... http://www.camaros.org/diffs67.shtml

Gardner exhaust has been mentioned many times on this forum as the place to go for a factory correct exhaust system.
Eric sent me the following message and we discussed the system for my car...
Vince,
Thanks for the inquiry. We can build a concours exhaust system for that car for you. It is best if you contact us directly so that we can discuss your system in its entirety with you. I can tell you that the orginal exhaust system was 2 1/4". A good deal of people think that the head pipes were 2" that is because they are swaged to 2" at the manifold and and swaged to 2" where they go into the over the axle pipes. I assure you the rest of the head pipes were 2 1/4".
We are looking forward to speaking with you.
Best Regards,
Eric Gardner

There seems to be a recent problem with mufflers supplied by Gardner. You may want to call and see if this area has smoothed out. The issue with pics is addressed here: http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=168582&highlight=gardner

Thanks guys.  CRG has done so much for the camaro restoration community, it has been a great reference for me.

Regarding the muffler problems:
I spoke with Eric about the previous problems with his mufflers as I am also an active member on Team Camaro and I also read that thread.  He has sourced a new manufacturer that has made a new custom muffler directly from his original and assured me that the level of quality is now even better than both of his past manufacturers.

Size of exhaust:
I wanted to relay the message to you guys on CRG that there is concern over the correctness of the table listing that the L48 had 2" exhaust.
Can anyone from CRG comment on the diameter of the pipes from the manifolds?

See that other thread for the end result of my Gardner purchase
http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=168582

I just sent back the muffler Eric said was better.
Still not the way I would for my car and certainly not for that price.

I would ask for pictures - and even have him send the muffler first,
so you don't have to eat the freight on the whole system if you are not happy.
ended up costing me $160 in freight both ways.

BUT MOST IMPORTUNATELY -
Why would you spend $1000 when you can get a system just as nice for $399?

with an extra 1/2 hour in labor - there is no difference in the Gardner system.
In fact until he finds a better supplier for the muffler - Gardner is of less quality - IMO

but hey - it's only money?

try these guys ---> www.drclassic.com

I'd have to double check, but the I think the 2" dimension came from Chevrolet literature.

Not that it is necessarily correct, but according to this '67 brochure the entire system was 2 1/4 with resonators...

Thanks for looking into it.

Chevrolet's AMA specifications submission dated 2/14/69 shows 2-1/4" pipes the full length of the exhaust system, including the tailpipes, for the L-48 and 396's (vs. 2" for the L-6, 307, and 350/250), and for the Z/28 (chambered system) it shows 2-1/4" forward pipes and 2" rear pipes and tailpipes. I don't have the pipe specs for the Z/28 without the chambered system, but it should be the same as the L-48/396 system.

What about for 1967... would that have been the same then?
