NHRA National Record At Maple Grove
« on: October 27, 2009, 11:03:41 PM »
Just to report to the group here, fell slightly short on the national record for D/Stock at Maple Grove this past weekend.  The weather was not there on Thursday, altitude was about 900-1000 feet.  Car ran an amazing 10.57 at 124.50 mph in that air.  The record is a 10.54.  Tried again on Friday and the air was worse, about 1400 feet, still ran a 10.58 at 124.12.  Here's the kicker, on race day, Sunday, eliminations, the car ran quicker than the national record in three rounds of the eliminator.  Only problem is record runs are not counted on race day.  I dialed the record in the first round of the eliminator, and made a little $$ in the eliminator.  Car is now n the 1.30's 60 ft times too.  So, all of the hard work this season paid off.  And thanks to many of you for your support.

Evan Smith was there who works for one of the big magazine companies and he shot the car Sat and Sunday for a Super Chevy article.

At least I know that the car is ready and in the right weather, I should be in the high 10.40's.

I'm in Missoula, MT now.  What a hike to get here!!  I didn't even know that Camaros were here!

Cold in Montana,

Jerry

Hi Jerry,I was scrolling thru your resto photos on your new Z racecar and you guys did a really nice job bringing it back to where it is now.I wanted to ask you when you win with it at a race does NHRA make you do a tear down of the motor? The engine looks so nice I would hate to take it all apart you know. ;D  That Z looks great comeing off the line!! Congrats on your win.Ron.

Fantastic runs / numbers and yet it has to be friggin' frustrating to be sooo close to the record..  60' down in the 1.30s has to hurt the back somewhat, but, I would bet you don't even feel it..  Gonna need a pilot's plate soon!!
Takes a lotta 'nads to do what you are doing off the line and still hold the pedal down w/o seeing the track, and,  doing it with consistency..
Congrats!!
T.

Thanks for all the kind comments.  The only time you have to take a head off is if you set a record or at random tear down at a national event.  That's it.  I'm use to it.  No big deal and it's been fairly easy keeping the car in "car show" condition at the track.  Have had many nice comments about the car all season.

There is one more NHRA national open in Valdosta, GA Thanksgiving weekend.  I am thinking about making the trip there to go for the record but again a lot will depend on the weather forcast for that week, and if the wife will give me the green light to go.  I was trying to figure out how far a drive that will be from Maryland and it's a long way.  Probably at least 13-14 hours.  Any normal person would not go through this stress!

Jerry, Valdosta,GA is very close to me and I'm off my day job that whole week. If you come down for the event let me know, I can probably hang out that weekend. Yes it's about 13-14 hours from you. It's about two hours west, northwest of me.  The weather here has been mid-high 70s during the day likely about the same there maybe a bit lower by then. It'd be awesome to finally see the car run if you come down! I'm probab;y not going to make it back up to Maryland until Xmas.

Chris,

Record runs are on Friday (day after Thanksgiving).  If I go, should I get the record I will go through tear down, and leave the car apart and bring it home and put it back together here at my shop.  I will not stay for the eliminator.

I need to know day by day weather for GA that week as that will also determine whether I go or not.

The weather and stress levels at the shop will determine everything.  I am in Dallas, TX now, I have to do Cedar Rapids, IA and Cleveland, OH trips before I can go.

Worst ride in a plane coming down here this morning.  Last row, #32 window seat right next to the friggin' jet engine.  Even with my Bose head phones it was terrible.
