1967 SS steering wheel horn button
« on: October 13, 2009, 06:05:46 PM »
I have a 1967 SS horn cap that looks to be original. It looks like the SS-350 cap but does not have the 350, just has SS. I was looking at the CRG steering wheel report and it says
three different horn caps were used with the standard steering wheel and the custom interior steering wheel.

the standard “Camaro” horn button, “SS-350” horn button, and RS horn button.

The CRG steering wheel report says the SS396 used the standard “Camaro” horn button?

Was there also a SS button?
thanks

Joe,

Although I did find a part number for a "SS 396" horn cap from a July, 1967 issue of a GLEN MITCHELL COLLISION ESTIMATOR (P/N 3914890), I couldn't find any reference to that number in any of my manuals. No other GM reference material I have show this number as being valid. Not even the 1971 Price Schedule (which shows all the other caps), so it may have been something that was considered, but never actually released.

It's probably an Impala steering wheel cap, or a repro.  67 Camaros never left the factory with an SS only horn cap.

thanks for the replys

I was just re-reading the steering wheel info and notice the 68 wheel has the dull finish compared to a shinny chrome for 67.

My wheel has the dull finish so I think it is a 68 wheel. (it was removed from a 67 so I assumed it was a 67 wheel).

The horn button finish matches the dull wheel finish.

I will have to look thru some old magazines to see if I can find it on another model.

BTW   Ed, nice job on the steering wheel report-thanks

I looked through some 1968 magazines and this SS horn button is on 2 new 1968 Camaros in 1968 magazines. These were probably both early cars.

here is a pic  from the magazine. It is a 1968 SS 396 no radio. They added a tach when they drag tested it in 1968 magazine.
