« on: September 03, 2009, 07:08:32 PM »
Hi,

anyone who can see, which type of gearbox we have here? Saginaw or Muncie? Anyone with experience regarding this type of gearbox? Good as well as bad....

How can i see if itīs a 3- or 4 speed?

Looking forward to hear from you

It's not a Muncie, might be a Saginaw - got a photo of the other side? If there are three levers in the side cover, it's a Saginaw 4-speed.

Hi again,

have posted a picture of the rigth side of the gearbox. Seems to be a Saginaw...

Is this worse or better than a Muncie? Any known weaknesses of the Saginaw 4-speed? Can i test it, without building it in, somehow?

Thanks for a fast answer

They are not a bad transmission, but they won't take a lot of power or abuse.  Granny shifted with a stock low-power engine and they do just fine.  If you want to do anything more than that, you need to get something a bit stronger.  I've never broken a Muncie tranny, broke 3rd gear in a BW T-10 and totally trashed a bunch of Saginaws.
