68 vs 67 keys
« on: May 02, 2009, 08:52:31 PM »
I read the very informative CRG article on the keys and I have a confusing situation.  I have a C ignition key and a B trunk key.  The trunk key wouldn't fit my glove box lock and after reading the article I realized that's because the glove box was a D and the trunk should have been D too.  Question is, can you put a 67 lock cylinder in a 68 case?  I know the easy answer is that someone put a 67 lock in my car, but from what I have read the 67 case would not fit in a 68 trunk with out the key being sideways.  My key is vertical  and the pattern is the 68 pattern for the trunk lock to fit in, so the lock case has to be 68.  So how did a 67 cylinder get in my 68 trunk lock?  Thanks.

I noticed in the Rick's catalog that they mention late model 67's have to use 68 trunk locks.  Any 67 experts that know anything about this?  Did they change the tunk lock pattern on late 67 bodies to the same pattern as 68?  That would explain my situation as someone just put a late model 67 lock in mine.

Kurt, anyone know if they changed the trunk lock openning on the late 67 to the 68 pattern?  Would a late 67 lock fit a 68?

HEY I ran into this a couple time's , the early 67's have a slightly different opening in the tailpan , it is like this

early 67 style will ONLY fit early 67 ORIGINAL tailpan and have the correct key position

late 67 style and 68 are the same and if you try to swap them it make's your key sideway's ,

my 67 RS has a build date of 10 E (OCT 1966) and it has the early style , I still have my original ignition and door / glove box lock's and even the original rochester key's and mine are an A and a B ,

That's what I thought  after looking everywhere for this.  Some one must have put a late 67 lock in my trunk position because there would be no reason to just put in a 67 cylinder.  I need to get a cylinder that will fit a 68 key or a whole 68 lock and have it keyed to my glove box.  Thanks for confirming.
