67 Camaro 327 info needed
« on: March 07, 2009, 08:25:38 PM »
I am new to this you please bear with me. I have a 67 Camaro Coupe. According to VIN 124377L149883 and cowl tag the vehicle would have been a 327. The problem is that I don't have the original engine. How can I determine if the vehicle came with a 327 210HP 2BBL carb or a 327 275HP 4BBL carb. Also not sure on transmission, the one I got with the vehicle is a TH400, although the transmission numbers coincide with the vehicle's build date how can I determine if TH400 is correct or was it a powerglide. The vehicle has a deluxe interior full front bench seat and a column shift. Trying to return vehicle to as close as original as possible.

I would start with the trim tag decoder. You can download it from:

69 X11 Z21 L14 glide
looking for a 69 export model (KPH) speed

By the way, welcome to the site!
Post a photo of the tag if possible. Meanwhile, click on the red logo (top right) and follow the decoding links. There is a LOT of knowledge on this site.

Thanks Tom for helping out a Newbie. I did the on-line decoder you suggested. I also checked Chevrolet by the numbers 1965-69 by Alan L. Colvin and Camaro restoration Guide 1967-1969 by Jason Scott. No specifics found to point either way. I did find something of interest on this site.
http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#CowlTag
2M  PWR GLIDE AUTOMATIC (NOR - only applied when D55 was included) (LOS - used in lieu of 2Z for the M40 TH400).  2Z THM400 3-speed automatic transmission (NOR only).  Am I reading this right that my vehicle did come with a TH400.

As for engine being 210HP (LF7) or 275HP (L30).  This is what I found http://www.camaros.org/l30m20.shtml . Seven different variations exist for the L30. Mine could fit
1- early L30/M20 cars with neither 4P code nor 12-bolt axle (early non- or standard-ratio posi production), or
2- a few L30/M20 cars with 12-bolt optional-ratio posi axle (non-radius rod) but no 4P code (early production),

The confusion continues. Open to suggestions. Thanks again. Claude

I would say that your car was a 327/210 powerglide car.  The L30/M20 was a manual shift car and yours appears to be an automatic.  The turbo 400 was only in big block camaros (L35) in 67.

Thanks Russ. I think so too but I am trying to find documented confirmation.

How can I confirm that vehicle was automatic or manual. The Cowl Tag doesn't have the 2M to indicate Powerglide.

Just trying to get it right the first time around.
Thanks again

I made a Newbie mistake. I doubled checked my cowl tag and found my error.  Wasn't 2EHR but 2EMR.

1967 Camaro Trim Tag
GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION
03C                  U518
ST 67    12637    LOS     18474    BODY
TR 767-H            H - 2    PAINT
E    2EMR    3K
           Blank           Blank
BODY BY FISHER

So the car was an automatic. Now I need to clarify taking into account that my vehicle was built in LOS.

http://www.camaros.org/numbers.shtml#CowlTag

2M  PWR GLIDE AUTOMATIC (LOS - used in lieu of 2Z for the M40 TH400).

Am I reading this right that my vehicle did come with a TH400. According to the previous owner the TH400 was what came in it and the tag info on TH400 does coincide with vehicle build date. A new question arises, the vehicle is a column shift. Could a TH400 be used in a column shift combination. If so, would there be something specific to identify the steering column as being for a TH400. To add to the confusion the previous owner had changed it to a floor shift and broken the shift indicator off the steering column.

Also checked http://www.chevy-camaro.com/chevy-camaro-trim-tag-decode-1967.asp

M - Powerglide transmission (LOS - TH400 it is thought)

 Thanks Claude

Claude,
You are not reading that correctly.
In the text, it states:
At the LOS factory, the 2M code was applied to any automatic transmission, including the M40 (e.g., the 2Z code was not used).

I'll make the table clearer.
