Engine Code Stamping on Block

In every picture I've seen of the codes stamped on the plate in front of the passenger side head on the block it shows the nine character code first followed by the seven character engine production code (reading from left to right).  On my engine the seven character code comes first followed by just the 6 digits from the VIN, or I haven't been able to see the 1,9, and then a N or L.  Is this possible, a mistake on the assembly line, or is my engine probably a restamp that was done incorrectly?  My car is a Los Angeles car built the 3rd week in Jan., 1969.  Thanks guys for all your helpful knowledge.

Post a good photo of your engine pad.  There are experts here that can tell you if it has been restamped.

Aren't big blocks stamped opposite order from SB engines?  re the VIN and app codes?   I may be screwing this up, but I know I've read sometime in the past a reason/situation for the opposite order....

The point I was trying to make was that all the biig block engines I've seen have the application code stamp on the LEFT hand side of the pad, and the VIN on the right hand side.   The CRG page you referenced does not address that difference that I've seen (and I went back and looked again in response to your post)...   ie.  Big blocks stampings are ordered oppositely from Small blocks re the VIN and App stamped codes...

Yes it does!!  Click on the center image and read the note on the bottom!     :)

Thanks for the info.  I'll try to get a good photo when I can and post it.  The engine is installed in the car and the pad is painted over.

.... so I went and looked again, and he was right.    but the information was too small to read 'without clicking on it'...  so that information was 'almost hidden' to me.... as I read thru.  I think the importance of that info is sufficient, that it should be made more prominent....  just a suggestion....

Big Blocks have an alternative location as well, by oil filter, based upon some good documentation on theCRG site, my BB is on this location

Good point.  Kurt, can we put the following statement at the end of the text just above the "Typical Engine Pad Stamp" photo?...

Note: The engine code location and the partial VIN location are switched on big block applications.  Small block engines are stamped as shown in the photo below.

If not, how about including a big block engine pad photo?  Six cylinder?
