How much end play should a 1111266 dist.have? Mine has about  .015 end play and before I install it I would like to know if this is an ok tolerance.

Is it better to have no end play or a little bit as I have?

*end play* on the distributor shaft results in 'ignition timing errors'..  so as little end play as possible, without unnencessary rotational friction, is better.  I'm sure the service manual has a spec on it.. I'd tend to go towards the low end of the spec range..

The end play spec for decades was .002"-.007", but very few were actually built that way; .010"-.015" will work just fine.

What would be the cause of the end play "opening up" to say:  .035 - .040?

Some were built that way, others open up due to wear on the shims between the top of the gear and the bottom of the housing.

My original distributor needs shimming properly (badly)...  I've never ran it, but would like to set it up and run it now.   Where is the best source for a 'shim kit'?   Are they generally available in parts stores as a 'kit'?

Thanks..  I was going to visit the Chevy Dealer, but my local one was one of the 14 Chevrolet stores owned by Bill Heard, who went into bankruptcy....
