Forged crank 3815822 is there...

Going through my cranks (not wife and mother-in-law) types but, the forged steel  units.  I came across 2 of the above 3815822 and I wonder, is there a mark or coding on these shafts that would define it or them for 302 usage???

I beleive 302 cranks would have a 3 inch throw. You should be able to measure if nothing else.

The 302 cranks were tuffrided, the 283 cranks were not.  Either way they do not comand big money like the large journal 302 cranks.  Plus, once the crank is turned you lose the tuffriding anyway.

I believe the 302 crankshaft has a notch in the flywheel flange, (kinda looks like "Pac Man" when view from the end) where a 283 crank has no notch. Check Colvin's By the Numbers. Both are 3" stroke I think.

The  3815822 cranks I have are 360 degrees (no notch) flywheel flanges..  According to what I have read, these are good on 283 and 302 Small  journal engines..  The both cranks are 10 / 10
mains n' rods meaning I guess the tuffriding layer is gone...  Was there an "X" or another type coding on these cranks de-noting early 302 e.g. 1967 + 1968 S J  usage ???  Thanks!!  Ted

The only difference in the 822 cranks used in the 302 is the tuffriding.  The 822 cranks that were in 283's had the notch in them as well.  The one in the middle is the 302 crank.

Morning Gennamen!!! The 3815822 forged units that I have are not notched and are 360 round... What numbered cranks came out on 302s for '67 as they were SJ units at that point in time??? Maybe they used 5822 cranks in '67  and had to re-balance them by putting the  notch in the 360 degree flange???  Ted

I was under the impression that the 283 cranks were not notched. That's what shows in Colvin's CBT. Not sure now what's what.

Just to let you know, in the 80's, I came across "2" 283 cranks with the pie cut in the flange. They were both from NOVA 283s. Just a little information for you guys.

The picture I posted above shows 2 283 cranks with the notch cut out of them and a 302 crank in between them.  One of the 283 cranks I removed from the 283 myself  and the other 283 crank was one my dad had laying around.  All 3 of these cranks are 822 castings.

Oh Oh, the 5822 cranks I have are not notched and are forged small journals...  Is there anywhere or any other coding(s) on the cranks that I can look for that will be define what the heck dese things came outta???  Are these dated somewhere?? That would cut down the possibility of a 302 part if these were date coded in '64 or earlier??? Getting a mite murky again, maybe I do have a 5822 non-notched 302 small journal crankshaft???
