69 DRIVESHAFT PAINT MARKS

What would be the correct number and color of paint rings on the drive shaft of a
1969 L48 350,  M20 4sp,  06A Norwood SS Cp

The shaft I have has the remains of 1 stripe but I can't tell the color. 

Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think anyone knows what these marks meant...hopefully some day we will figure it out!!!  From everything I have seen though I think there were always 3 stripes-Look closely and clean with a rag and soap and water or 409.  I NEVER saw the marks on mine until I was getting ready to restore it and cleaned it.

I think I read someplace that they might indicate which drive train they match up to. That would make sense, as different trans/engine combos would require different length shafts. It's at least a theory.

Driveshafts were different lengths, and had different front yokes depending on the transmission used; they arrived at the plant as assemblies, including the U-joints and front yokes, and the paint rings identified the usage for each different driveshaft assembly.

Yes but what do the actual marks mean, i.e. color code?

They are just ID marks. The plant knew what the stripe combos meant. There were only 2 or 3 different shafts used every year.

I would hope the plant knew what the marks ment! LOL  I want to know what they ment!!!

Maybe that info is in the 69 Service Manual...? I'm mostly a Pontiac guy and this info is in Pontiac service manuals for each year. Here's the info for 69 Firebird if it helps any -

3 & 4 speed manual, 2 speed auto, M38 auto = 1 blue stripe
3 speed HD manual = 1 white stripe, 1 green stripe
M40 auto (turbo 400) = 1 red stripe, 1 pink stripe

Good info. The Pontiac service manuals have different content than Chevy, for some reason. All the radiator usages are listed, for another example.

I need a 69 Firebird Chassis Broadcast sheet to see if the usages are the same. I don't think so, but easy to check.
