LocationTemplate for cutting hole in floor tunnel for Hurst shifter...

Greetings to all. I am in the process of preparing to install a Muncie M20 and Hurst shifter in my '68 Camaro which currently has the PowerGlide automatic. I have heard that there may be a template available to properly mark the hole location for the floor tunnel opening for the shifter. I assume this would be a paper or card stock template placed on the floor to identify proper locating of the hole prior to cutting.

Has anyone seen this template or know of where to obtain one ??

Is it a Competition/Plus or a Super Shifter? With either one, just install the bare shifter minus the handle and mark the transmission tunnel from the bottom where the handle will be centered. Drill a small hole up from the bottom at the mark, then use aviation snips or a cutoff wheel to cut out a 4"x6" rectangular hole for the handle. Keep in mind that a Super Shifter will be off-center of the tunnel. A Comp/Plus will not. I know of no template unless Hurst provides one. Good luck and happy rowing!

If possible, if the floor hole is still accessible,  could you lay a ruler or tape measure next to the hole, with the ruler's starting "0" end at the floor crease just ahead of the hole, and take another pic for hole size and location? This would help me in prepping for my car's "surgery".   

Do you (or anyone) know if this looks like a hole that was cut at the factory?

Actually out of town until the weekend of the 25th, not sure if the dimensions are in the '69 FAM. Anyone know? Looks like you can use the boot retainer for a template.

I wish I had the FAM (factory assembly manual). Sure would be neat if someone who has one could take a look and see if there is any info in the manual regarding hole size, location dimensions, etc.

I would like to keep the hole as small as possible.

The Assembly Manual doesn't have the dimensions for the hole - it was pierced and the reinforcing ring was welded in by Fisher Body, not Chevrolet ('67-'68 had a neatly-pierced hole and welded reinforcing ring, '69 just had a torch-cut hole and no ring). Photo below is a '67 4-speed opening, which I believe was the same as the '68.

these measurements are from THREE '69 Camaro's (including the green one) I've had, ALL were stamped or die cut, NOT torched.

Camaroon, before you make any cuts you need to determine which shifter you are going to use. The hole location is different in 69 than in 67-68 and the shifter mounting kit applications for the Hurst Competition Plus are different for that reason. It is the easiest to use the 67-68 shifter because then if you decide to install a console it will come out in the correct location. Besides, the dimples for the shift boot retainer are already in the top of your tunnel.  Aligin the retainer to the dimples, mark the hole, then cut. No measuring and hoping it is correct. One thing to note though, if you are using a 69-up shift forks that use the bolt to attach the shift levers, then you will have to order those from Hurst seperately because the ones for the 68-earlier transmissions will not fit the later transmissions. Other than that it is a straight forward installation..................RatPack............

I dug this back up to ask a question too. My 67 has a floor shifted PG w/console now. Is the factory hole for the pg shifter in the same/correct location for a Hurst comp plus shifter when I make the change over ?
