DZ 302 Timing Valve Question...
« on: June 30, 2008, 03:22:20 AM »
I am helping a friend of mine set the valves in his '69 Camaro. I read the article here http://www.camaros.org/302valves.shtml which describes in great detail how it is done. However, this is where trouble comes into paradise for us...

Quote
You can adjust two valves at each 90-degree rotation point, starting at cylinder #1 TDC and turning the crank 90 degrees at a time, seven times (first measure and mark your balancer at 90-degree intervals from TDC).

Is the "Seven times" step a misprint? Case we tried it two ways, and neither is correct when we double check it. here is what we tried...

1) We rotate the balancer at 90 deg intervals 7 times for each set of valve adjustments.

2) We rotate the balancer at 90 deg 7 times the first time, and then only 90 deg each time after that.

But I am thinking that the quote needs to be read...

Quote
You can adjust two valves at each 90-degree rotation point, starting at cylinder #1 TDC and turning the crank 90 degrees at a time, nine times (first measure and mark your balancer at 90-degree intervals from TDC).

And that we set it TDC and adjust the first two valves, then rotate it 90 deg for each set of adjustments thereafter.

Now, am I a fool? Cause the other ways I tried did not work.

Thank you and Great site BTW.

lol, NVM! I get it. The table having 9 steps confused me, but it is indeed, TDC-90-90-90-90-90-90-90.

We should have it running in no time, but you know how it is... got to over complicate it and make all the stupid ass mistakes first...

Ok, so I did it exactly as stated in the paperwork on the CRG tech guide. I adjusted each valve .026 Ex/.026 In, in the correct order, rotating the balancer 90 deg. each time. So I go back to check my work, and each cylinder reads .024 on Intake, and .018 on exaust... I am puzzled as in the guide it says that I should be reading .024 on both. So I am thinking that maybe, at some time in the cars life, that maybe the cam got swapped? Or is it reading right? Or What?

Adjust to .026" as long as factory rockers are used. I use the Comp roller tips at a true 1.5:1 so they can be adjusted to .030".

The lash has to be adjusted at the center of the base circle not TDC.This means the high point of the cam lobe is pointing 180 degrees away from the lifter. You are adjusting on the clearance ramps.Or rechecking on the clearance ramps. Both should still read .026 .

Might be off topic a little but what are you using to rotate the engine. I can't seem to keep the socket on the HB bolt. I have two blue thumb nails from slips. I did remove all the plugs but the engine is a bear to turn. I was hoping to make my final value adjustments before I install the smog system due to the fact the the value covers hit the smog value.

Steve, not sure if you have read the article, but the check after seting .026" is to recheck @TDC. The cam is on the ramp at that point and should read .024".

Thanks guys, and yeah, we are thinking that she may be a different cam. To bad to cause this is a great way to do it. For now we are going "Old School" on it, getting it to ruin, and adjusting "by ear".

Also, I took everything off of the front of the Balancer, and am using a long ratchet to rotate the plant. No plugs of course.
