1968 Diverter Valves
« on: February 08, 2006, 01:31:03 AM »
With regard to the camaros.org/coolingsystems report.  I have been looking into the question of just how valid the 68 part numbers are that are provided in the assembly manual (AM).  I want to say up front that I think Kurt did a nice job on the his (CRG) Report and I mean no disrespect to him or the work with what I've put in the attached table for folks to review.  While there are typo's in the AM part numbers I think that we can generally accept them as accurate until proven otherwise.  I've put together a table of valves that I could find in the 68 manual and some support info found in the AM for each where I found it.  Even though I can't find supportive info for each, as is the case for the Z28, I think that the fact it is in the manual is good enough for us to use for the hobby and think it's not unreasonable to utilize it in a list of numbers when "checking" valves.

I just bought a NOS diverter valve with a "DH" ink stamp, stamped at the base 24765. I am a little confused, thinking 28649 was for a 68 Z28. I need a diverter bracket, hose, and elbow for same. Dean 1genclassic@sbcglobal.net

Yes it helps ccargo :)  The more info the better!!  Dean, do you mean 28469 instead?  The 24765 is the # given in the 68 AM.  I think it is a valid valve for the 68 Z.  By the way, I am not saying that the CRG table is not correct in any way.

I need to review some docs to compare all the numbers again. It's been too long to remember much about all the #'s. But I'm busy with a few other things (house stuff, etc) so it will be a bit.

Would you mind checking the location of that number for us and reporting back.  The reason I ask is because there is the diverter valve (with a #) and attached to it is an extension (with a #).  The valve number is right next to where the extension and valve bolt together and the extension number is at the other end of where they bolt together.  Please recheck the number "2" in the 702 part also to see if it could be a "3".  Thanks!

Looking at your picture, place yourself on the left side looking straight on at the valve end.  Now look at the area below the valve body and on the part 90 degrees to the body that has the bolts that attach the valve to the orange bracket.  Look for 5 digits (facing the front).  These digits are the "valve" numbers.  Looking at it as in your picture.....the numbers are just below the vacuum line and 90 degrees to the left on the vertical shaft which is behind the bolt head.

I was wonder the same thing. I have seen "DH" Ink Stamped Diverter Valves #7036449 with the base stamped 24765 and also 28469. Which is correct for a 68 Z28? Also is the 7036449 part number correct because the 68 Assembly Manual shows the part number as 7024765.

There's a major disconnect between the part #'s that appear in the AIM and the part #'s in other GM docs. Some of the change notices in the AIM are missing, but  three show the other part #. Two are early in the model year but the Z is 12/1/68. So it looks like they changed part #'s early on and that never got captured by supporting documentation. Possibly the early Z's used the other part #.

It would be good to confirm these parts on some more cars.

Here's what the AIM has:
L6  7024766
LF7 7024767
L30 7024768
L35 7024764  - confirmed
Z28 7024765 - on NOS part

Other docs show:
L6  7035001
LF7 7035002
L30 7035004 & L48
L35 7028299
Z28 7028469

Kurt quote, "Two are early in the model year but the Z is 12/1/68"

Would that not be, 12/1/67 for the 68 model year?
