Need help trying to identify my 67 RS Conv w/AC as a L-30 /M-20
« on: February 03, 2008, 09:02:28 PM »
As the new guy on the block, this is my 1st message.
I just had my # matching 67 RS Convertible w/ factory AC delivered back to me after a 3 year restoration. Although I have owned this car since 1975, I am relatively new at the numbers and decoding of the car.  After reading the artical by  Rich Fields on the CRG I became intrigued at the prospect of my car being one of the L-30/M-20 survivors.
I would greatly appreciate if someone could help me determine this or anything else about the rarety of this car.  Below is all the information I have validated to date

VIN#1   124677N132678
 Trim Tag:
               11B                              E
         ST    67-12667              NOR   32781   BODY
         TR      765-Z                      G-2           PAINT
                                                                   Z
             ED-2ELG                 3L

ENGINE 327/275 HP
ENGINE CAST# 3903352    CAST DATE J-266
ENGINE ASSEMBLE DATE T1109MK

I SWITCHED THE REAR FOR A 12 BOLT 3.55, BUT STILL HAVE THE ORIGINAL
REAR CAST#          N
                     3894859
REAR DATE CODE PA11106       (There is a 2 stamped on the opposite axel tube. Possibly the shift #??)

The tranny is a Saginaw 4-speed, but I haven't gotten under the car yet to validate #'s.  (I didn't have enough forsight to get all the numbers while the trans was being rebuilt 2years ago)  The restoration shop told me the tranny has the full vin stamped on the side, which for a 67 doesn't seem to agree with the Research I have read.  I thought only SS and Z-28's had the partial vin on the tran's.
The speedometer cable goes thru the firewall on the drivers side of the steering column, and the car does have the rear brake proportioning valve on the sub frame below the drivers door.

I have kept the car completely original, with the exception of the rear.   Sitting in the car for the first time after almost 30 years has been a real thrill.  Besides a few drips from the trans and engine, and a guage or two jumping, it runs great!  Looking foward to a nice day to take the top down and go for a spin.
I would post a photo, but haven't figured out how to do that yet.   Thanks for any help...

You cannot post a picture from Quick Reply, so use tbe Reply button at bottom of this page.  In Reply page, click Additional Options.  An Attach feature will appear.  In Attach, use Browse to find the picture on your computer and attach it.  The pic cannot be any larger than 128KB.  If it is, then use a third party like Photobucket.

Thanks for the confirmations on the L30/M20.  Do you know if there is anyone keeping a data base on survivors?

The CRG maintains a database of first gens.  Your car is in it now. :)

I'd be curious what you find on the trans, esp the VIN.

I finally got under the car, to check trans numbers, and I'm really confused.  I don't find a match to anything I've read in the CRG.  Hopefully someone can help me out with this.
The numbers as I can read them, are as follows:
Passinger Side
                      GM 1
                   3890564
                      J246
opposite the speedometer cable, (above plug)   3860042         GM6 (not sure on the 6)

Bottom    B  (by itself)
          22  0564

Drivers Side    1 (by itself, near side cover)

                   X
          GM  3890527     6(not sure on 6)

J 226(not sure on last digit)

By speedometer cable   K 7(or1) 6

There is a small pad below the drivers side cover that has faint markings. The first letter is either P or R and I can't make out the rest
If you have any suggestions please let me know how I can identify.   Thanks....Jeff

3890564 is a 66 Saginaw 4 speed.

>There is a small pad below the drivers side cover that has faint markings.
That's the pad that had the date code stamp. Starts with an R, then probably 3 or 4 numbers.

Thanks for the confirmation.  I understand that there is a vin or partial vin stamped above the side cover, that I can't see.  The vin is suppose to match the cars vin, but I'll have to wait till I pull the trans in the spring to confirm. ( I have a small leak in trans, so when I get it pulled, I'll be sure to photo the vin and trans)  I'll post an update at that time.   Jeff
