Is it my opinion but are Restamped parts becoming acceptable?
« on: December 24, 2007, 04:49:18 PM »
Why would anybody waste money on a restamped part if they had no intention on fooling anyone (judges, buyers etc.). I need a 837 alternator for my documented 1969 L78 Camaro and have never considered the restamp alternative, I prefer to put a blank casting untill I find a original one. In my opinion a restamp part or altered casting numbers are not OK by me.

I would use something that was a known restamp if it was cheap and looked correct, until I can get the real deal.  Some of the parts for my car like the alt. and dist. are hard to find, let alone with the right date, and very expensive.  But, to think you are buying the right thing and get ripped off, or to try and sell your car and pass these off as real, is not kosher.

Getting burned is not a good feeling. I almost got taken for a ride with someone I knew, he swore up and down that this 837 alt. he was selling was original but I noticed a depression where the 7 was and passed on it. I thought the alternator was questionable/odd  and just figured he bought it that way. Then I found out from someone else that it was in fact bogus and the 7 was altered by the guy that tried to sell it to me. Wow I was floored, I couldn't believe it what money does to people. This person has not tried to apologize for his actions. Its to bad because this person has educated himself on the cars and parts and now I just see him as a pathetic individual.

I can see both sides of the coin.  Many cannot afford big $$ for a real alternator or distributor so having a reproduction or restamp is acceptable to them.  For those who have the money to spend, I always tell our customer base to make sure that there is a money back guarantee on the part if it's being represented as original.  If the seller does not want to honor that then don't do business with someone like that.  Move on and keep looking.

Verify any high dollar part that you buy with a knowledgable vendor.  Many in our customer base have parts sent to us for verification.

Shop smart and you won't get burned.

Merry Christmas,

Jerry
